Douglas West is Professor of Marketing, King's College London. Prior to this he was Professor of Marketing at Birmingham Business School, and Director of the MARCOMS Research Centre at the University of Westminster. Previously he has held positions at South Bank, Henley Management College, and the University of Calgary. John Ford is Professor and Eminent Scholar at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He specializes in international marketing strategic issues, and his specific interests in research include cross-cultural advertising and marketing research issues. Essam Ibrahim is Coordinator of PhD Marketing Degree at the University of Edinburgh Business School. Prior to this he has taught and researched marketing at the University of Strathclyde, Manchester Metropolitan University, Huddersfield University, and Cairo University.

About the Author
Eleanor Hoffmann graduated from Radcliffe College the same year the country entered WWI. She did her part for the war by becoming a “farmerette” in Massachusetts for the Women’s Land Army, running a diary for a farmer enlisted in the war. When he returned, she spent a year teaching High School Latin and French in Chapel Hill, NC. After studying Botany at the University of North Carolina, she traveled the State overseeing landscaping projects that introduced native plants around high schools. Today, native plants are recognized as a useful conservation practice, but it was a concept still in its infancy in the early 1920s. The next three years she spent teaching Botany, Latin, and French at the Hampton Institute in Virginia, one of the first black colleges in America. Eleanor began her world travels in 1924, supporting herself by buying Moroccan tribal rugs for customers in the United States. She was a pioneer doing business as a single woman in a traditional Islamic culture. Eleanor developed a crippling form of arthritis in 1932, and returned to her family in Santa Barbara, California. During the next 21 years, she wrote 16 books for children. Her themes included ancient Morocco, Bedouin life, and adventure stories involving animals.

A magical read!

I LOVED this book when I was a child!!! It was one of my all time favorites and I read and reread it so many times. The magical story of the djinns, the fennec fox, and the beautiful old city of Fez completely captured my imagination. I'm really thrilled that this book is now available for a whole new generation of readers. I reread it again recently and found it just as charming and delightful. Even though it was written a long time ago, the prose is still fresh and undated. I know young readers today will enjoy it just as much as I did.

One of the "Best-Kept Secret" Children's Classics of All Time

Like many readers and reviewers, I was first introduced to Eleanor Hoffmann's marvelous and exquisitely magical 'Mischief in Fez' via a collection of volumes that were supplementary to my father's stodgy old Colliers Encyclopedia set. The multi-colored adjunct collection was meant for children and appropriately titled "The Young Folks' Shelf of Books." Each volume gathered a panorama of international children's fairy tales, poems, myths, fables, short stories, folklore and other various works --famous and not-so-famous-- and grouped the material in thematic anthologies. 'Mischief in Fez' was published in the "green volume," which was called 'Magic in the Air.' I'll never forget the endless hours of reading pleasure occasioned by the presence of these excellent books in our home, and it is a singular stroke of good fortune that the editors selected 'Mischief in Fez' for inclusion. Indeed, this gorgeous little tale might otherwise have been forgotten altogether, having been published in the early 1940s and out-of-print by the late 1960s, when Colliers produced their children's compendium.

Frankly, the Colliers children's books (like the encyclopedias) were already quite old and dusty by the time my interest was ensnared in the early 1980s, but 'Mischief in Fez' was far and away my favorite of all the featured stories. I am not exaggerrating when I state that no other children's tale ever captured my imagination quite the way this one did, with its winsomely exotic Morroccan setting, mesmerizing characters, and truly breathtaking little plot. You just got lost and transported ... and you loved every minute of it! Of course, the story was all the more compelling because its hero, Mousa, is a little boy caught-up in the troubles that ensue when his wealthy household in the ancient city of Fez is enchanted by the power of meddling djinns. Mousa is a wonderful character -- too old to be pampered by his father's servants and yet still too young to be taken seriously by anyone, which makes him a magnetic narrative presence for any child who delves into his world. In order to rescue his beloved father and all the other harried adults from calamity, Mousa is obliged to take matters into his own hands and fight magic with magic, forging a risky alliance with the kindly djinns whose business it is to undo the mischief of their malevolent peers.

This highly original and fast-paced story is loaded with things that children will absolutely love: shape-shifting creatures both frightening and companionable; secret spells; mystical locales; and a number of plot twists that will keep the attentive young reader breathless with interest and anticipation. Honestly, adults will get a kick out of it, too. I know I still do. Hoffmann's storytelling skills were nothing short of brilliant within this framework; her voice is endearingly classic and traditional, while her style is never anything less than accessible. She weaves a tale as if you were perched at her knee, the wondrous tapestry of Mousa's adventure with Baha the fennec unfolding before your very eyes. As a sumptuous bonus, 'Mischief in Fez' is enhanced with several lavish illustrations by the great Fritz Eichenberg, whose dark but whimsical drawings will captivate little minds and inspire a real sense of wonder.

Obviously, I cannot recommend this work highly enough. Hoffman's book is easily on par with contemporary classics like Neil Gaiman's enchanting 'Coraline,' which shares a number of overarching themes and motifs with 'Fez.' It is a happy thing to know that the story has survived the test of time almost solely due to its worthy inclusion in the classic Colliers volumes, longstanding word-of-mouth, and the fond memories of those for whom 'Mischief in Fez' was a simply unforgettable tale that brings us back to the comfort and joy of magical childhood. (You ALL know who you are!) Eleanor Hoffmann will always and forever be a hallowed name in my library and in my home. I am grateful to her for writing such a beguiling little masterpiece so long ago and equally delighted that her heirs (who have published this edition) have kept the light of this radiant story alive for future generations. Buy this for your kids to read and, better yet, join in the fun by reading it to them: they'll be awestruck.

'Mischief in Fez' is one of the "Best Kept-Secret" children's classics of all time ... a rare gem that will be passed along with enduring pride in your family for generations to come.

Magic Realism At Its Best

This is a delightful book--a delicately wrought fantasy, the essence of magic realism. It is the tale of a Moroccan boy led on mystical adventures by a fennec -- a desert fox. I read Fez an untold number of times in the 4th grade; remembered it fondly over the decades; luckily found a library copy a few years ago and read it with pleasure once again. I can safely state that (in my case at least) Ms. Hoffmann's book is for readers of all ages -- from 10 years to senior citizens. I should also state that lodged in my memory through the years, Fez informed my own writing. I thank Ms. Hoffmann for that as well. It was a pleasant mystery to me how an early-20th Century American woman could have such knowledge of Moroccan culture. Fortunately her heirs have now republished this little masterpiece. In so-doing they provide information I always suspected: The author was a uniquely adventurous spirit. She traveled alone in North Africa in the 1920s supporting herself by purchasing tribal rugs and "was a pioneer doing business as a single woman in a traditional Islamic culture." The book's illustrations by Fritz Eichenberg, are delicate line drawings in perfect harmony with the text. Eichenberg was an adventurous spirit in his own right. A left wing graphic artist opposed to the Nazis, he fled Hitler's Germany and made his way to New York. There he taught at The New School -- and provided the fine drawings for Fez. I have just ordered the new paperback and look forward to sharing it with children and grandchildren and friends. Hmmm... maybe I need a few copies.

The book starts with an overview of methods for the acquisition of historical texts (scanning and OCR), discusses text encoding and annotation schemes, and presents examples of corpora of historical texts in a variety of languages. The book then discusses specific methods, such as creating part-of-speech taggers for historical languages or handling spelling variation. A final chapter analyzes the relationship between NLP and the digital humanities.

Certain recently emerging textual genres, such as SMS, social media, and chat messages, or newsgroup and forum postings share a number of properties with historical texts, for example, nonstandard orthography and grammar, and profuse use of abbreviations. The methods and techniques required for the effective processing of historical texts are thus also of interest for research in other domains.

Eckhart Tolle

Spiritual teacher and author Eckhart Tolle was born in Germany and educated at the Universities of London and Cambridge. Tolle nows how to reach deep within and awaken the sense. The self is so much negated by society from the day we are born. We are dependent on our caregivers and if you are lucky, you have ones that know how to take care of you so you can mirror, and also ones that guide you to the path of being.

A historical fiction, but really it’s an adventure novel with a religious conspiracy running right through it.

The 17th Century was a turning point for many things, most notably the slow demise of the Holy Roman Empire and the rise of France. What I didn’t realize was the international nature of the conflict, where a Turk might fight for Spain, and a Scot for Sweden. Long before the arrival of motor transport, people were traveling the world, seeking adventure.
That’s what this book is about – adventure. It’s set in the Thirty Years War, seen through the eyes of four siblings: three good, and one really nasty villain, an intriguing mix of psychopath, sociopath and lost boy, with a hint of OCD thrown in. The background is historically accurate in the main, although Bolan takes some liberties with when inventions actually took place.
I grew up in Germany where much of the Thirty Years War happened. When we learned about it in school, it was dull, just a series of names and dates. Bolan’s book is completely different – it’s full of rich characters who struggle to survive in those turbulent times. Most of the main characters are very believable, although I think the author is keeping something in reserve, especially with the heroine Isabella. She’s well-drawn, but doesn’t do much, which left me hoping for more in the rest of the series.
I really enjoyed this book, in fact I surprised myself that I enjoyed it so much. It’s set as historical fiction, but really it’s an adventure novel with a religious conspiracy running right through it. I can’t wait to see what happens next…

Great book for action/thriller/consipiracy/underdog/historical fiction lovers

I received a free review copy of this book from the author and in return agreed to give it an honest review. I expected to be underwhelmed, but came away extremely impressed and wanting to read the next installment.

It is in two genres (besides the main genre of historical fiction) that deserve their own names by now, though the names I'd give are way too long. Genre 1: world-wide conspiracy with deep historical roots, happening invisibly but under our noses and affecting the fates of millions (think *Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code*, A.G. Riddle's *The Atlantis Gene*, or the Indiana Jones series). Genre 2: the rebel underdog fighting with impossible odds against an evil empire with unimaginable power (think Star Wars, Brave Heart, Gladiator).

Why did I expect to be underwhelmed? This is a first novel from someone who did not spend his life as an aspiring writer. I read it because I know the author, he's a smart guy, and it was a free copy. I am a sucker for action/thriller/mystery & historical fiction, so I suppose I'm an ideal candidate for this kind of multi-genre action-filled book, but I'm also probably too well-educated and too old and skeptical to like most books written for this audience even when they're extremely well reviewed. So I figured I'd read it because I like bad fiction even when the content is mostly garbage, but I also figured I wouldn't love it.

But the book surprised me. It's smart, it covers a location meaningful to me (Europe from Ireland to the Czech Republic, where I now live) and an exciting period in history (the 30 years wars) that has received too little coverage in popular historical fiction. It has a great underdog story with strong relationships that build over the course of the novel and really connect you to the heroes and their small but growing team of rebels. And it also provides a great lesson in history, religion, and the history of science that makes you want to read more about the time while still conveying a sense of the time in the writing. It's a wonderful book covering original territory that has the potential to be the first volume of an epic thriller.

My one complaint is that the story ended too abruptly so that it didn't feel complete. While the book is part of a series, I like to have a sense of completion after each book or I feel cheated. I didn't feel that sense of completion with this book. But I guess the good news is there's a next book in the series that promises to carry the story onward. And the story in the first book is still long and full and compelling, so still highly worth the read in its own right.

A great novel for lovers of history, and action

In a war-ridden Europe, Willem, Leo, and Isabella exile themselves from their tyrannical brother, Reinald. They rely on each other and their growing group of mercenaries in their goal to depose Reinald, who has become part of a movement to bring about the Apocalypse. With the help of an Irishman, the siblings find that they must aim higher than their rightful inheritance. They must put an end to the work of the Four Horsemen for the sake of the world.

The Sons of Brabant is a wonderfully crafted novel. While I wasn't sure of it in the beginning, the writing and story quickly drew me into the 1600s. This is probably the best start to a series I've read in quite a while. The characters were all fully developed by the end, smaller plots were completed, but all this was done with the promise of more, yet I wasn't left frustrated by unanswered questions or dangling plot lines. The ending perfectly sets up the second novel, which I was gratefully told will arrive in the Fall of 2015. I'm also grateful to see a strong female character in Isabella. Of course there was some romantic mentions, but that wasn't what made her character. She's beautiful, but that's not what other characters remember of her. It's her passion, intelligence, and her kindness that sets her apart and makes her the true leader of the exiled siblings (which her brothers admit.) Bolan shows his deep understanding of European history with his descriptions of the wars and battles, along with the political climate. It's refreshing to read a novel where I am so immersed that I don't bother fact checking. For me, that's saying a lot. I fact check menus. There's a fantastical element to the novel which made that much easier. I loved the inclusion of so many cultures and seeing how they interacted.

Overall I think this is a great novel for anyone who enjoys action and history. This is one novel that makes you ponder the consequences of right and wrong, and who determines those sides of the coin.
