Great!
By Lawrence E. Frie
I love this Turkish grammar book by Aslı Gksel. It is better than her first Turkish grammar "Turkish: A Comprehensive Grammar" in that it is accessible to the beginning or intermediate student. The appendixes at the end of the book are really useful, especially the appendix on verb conjugation. I recommend it. I just wish the authors would publish it for Kindle or iBooks.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The end of the world was only the beginning.

In his internationally bestselling and critically acclaimed novel The Passage, Justin Cronin constructed an unforgettable world transformed by a government experiment gone horribly wrong. Now the scope widens and the intensity deepens as the epic story surges forward with . . .

THE TWELVE

In the present day, as the man-made apocalypse unfolds, three strangers navigate the chaos. Lila, a doctor and an expectant mother, is so shattered by the spread of violence and infection that she continues to plan for her child’s arrival even as society dissolves around her. Kittridge, known to the world as “Last Stand in Denver,” has been forced to flee his stronghold and is now on the road, dodging the infected, armed but alone and well aware that a tank of gas will get him only so far. April is a teenager fighting to guide her little brother safely through a landscape of death and ruin. These three will learn that they have not been fully abandoned—and that in connection lies hope, even on the darkest of nights.

One hundred years in the future, Amy and the others fight on for humankind’s salvation . . . unaware that the rules have changed. The enemy has evolved, and a dark new order has arisen with a vision of the future infinitely more horrifying than man’s extinction. If the Twelve are to fall, one of those united to vanquish them will have to pay the ultimate price.

A heart-stopping thriller rendered with masterful literary skill, The Twelve is a grand and gripping tale of sacrifice and survival.

Amazon.com Review
An Exclusive Essay by Author Justin Cronin

Readers often ask where I get my ideas. The better question would be: Where don’t I?

Many people know that The Passage was born from a challenge laid down by my eight-year-old daughter to write the story of “a girl who saves the world.” This wasn’t exactly what I wanted to hear—it seemed a trifle ambitious—but a dare is a dare. For the next three months she joined me on my daily jog, following along on her bicycle, while the two of us hashed out the plot. As the weeks passed, I realized we were onto something much better than the book I was supposed to be writing. I put that book aside, wrote the first chapter of The Passage, and never looked back.

So don’t ever think you shouldn’t listen to your kids.

But my daughter’s challenge wasn’t the only inspiration. When I write a novel, my goal is to put absolutely everything I have into its pages, right down to the interesting thing that happened yesterday. I know I’m done when my mind feels as empty as a leaky bucket. So many influences, real and imagined, went into The Passage that I couldn’t list them if I tried. But one memory that stands out is the night my family and I tried to flee Houston in advance of hurricane Rita. Apparently, about a million other people had the same idea. After five hours on the road, we’d made it all of sixty miles. The highways were clogged with cars that had long since run out of gas; every minimart and gas station had been picked clean. I jumped the median and made it home in a little under an hour, my gas gauge floating just above ‘E’.

Rita missed Houston, slamming into a less-inhabited section of Texas and Louisiana coastline. But the experience of being in a large urban evacuation, with its feeling of barely-bottled panic, was one I’ll never forget, and is everywhere in the pages of The Passage.

So where did The Twelve come from?

Again, many places. But if I had to pick one source, it would be the strong women in my life. No bones about it: Gentlemen, if you doubt for a second that women are tougher than we are, go watch one have a baby. So here you have Alicia, the woman warrior with her blades and crossbow; here you have Amy, the spiritual leader and visionary; here you have one of my favorite new characters, Lore DeVeer, whose mechanical savvy is matched only by her unbridled sensuality; here you have a fourth woman (sorry, can’t tell you who) whose maternal strength is as powerful as any great spectacle of nature. As I wrote The Twelve, I came to understand that these powerful characters were the backbone of the tale. Even more, they are a tribute to all the amazing women I am privileged to know, befriend, and in one very lucky instance, marry.

Hope you enjoy The Twelve. All eyes.

Two tomes down, one to go
By Mark Nechodom
If Justin Cronin were not such a good writer, I would've put this whole series down a long time ago. But I kept reminding myself of the experiences of reading James Michener's novels. Which I had not done in sometime. Books such as these are at times a labor of love, not only on the part of the author, but on the part of the reader as well. I found myself slogging through minute details filling whole chapters, and then coming across a paragraph or a passage that was so well written I would go back and read it again. Sometimes again and again. And then there's the plot: at once finding myself saying "oh no, not another vampire story." But then again, standing back, seeing the entire arc of the story so far, I have developed a fond appreciation for the story and many of the characters. It is epic. And beautifully crafted in places.

Impressive
By Mrs.Quinci35
This is a marvelously written scary tale for adults to read at night.

For a dark story, it's bright and vivid. Cronin is mindful of details and never leaves us hanging or confused. Each new development has a starting point and conclusion. Every character met has a end, even if you don't learn it right away.

The descriptive details are so well done one can easily envision the decrepit war torn cities or the sight of evil as claws are flexed and teeth are exposed. You can almost hear the creaking of doors as they open or the sound of underbrush crunching under boots in the forest. It's all very exciting! Reading it made me feel like a kid again when I lay beside my mother as she read on about Grover and the monster under his bed. It's very captivating.

What I love is how the story is mature with depth and so far from superficial. So many fiction novels stay on the surface. Characters and plots move forward in a basic way feeding the reader little quality. You don't know what the characters are feeling or experiencing on a deeper level. Here you learn all things: sights, smells, sounds, feelings, thoughts and individual dispositions. No two characters are the same. There is always something new to learn.

There is also a journalistic quality to the work almost like one big elaborate set of human interest pieces merged and compiled to create a whole new story where lives overlap and each backstory has one common element: death and vampires. Even the antagonists' stories are complicated with their beginnings, midpoints and endings. Everyone and everything has a story.

Cronin gives us a wide view of this diseased riddled world with brave survivors fighting an immortal force hell bent on eradicating humanity. I love it!

Great continuation of the story
By J. L. J. Wilson
The Twelve is the second book in the The Passage trilogy. It continues the story of the key characters that survived Book 1 some 5 years after them reaching Roswell - and the events that occurred there. In addition, early on in the book it introduces a couple more time perspectives. One set in the days immediately after the original collapse of Project Noah and the over some 30 years before the events of the main timeline. We are provided with some new (and familiar) characters and different back stories that contribute to the overall telling of the trilogy. I enjoyed this as it gave it depth. Although I wish I had found the list of characters before I got to the end of the book!

I started this book immediately after Book 1. It is a bit darker - in terms of lows that mankind has and will stoop to. That said the story is enthralling. Within minutes of finishing The Twelve I downloaded the final book City of Mirrors.

3 Wasn't Feeling it... Stars..
By Unsolicited Reviews
I have to say that I was excited when I saw this was recently published. I jumped on it right away. Sadly, though, I was quite underwhelmed with this book. The authors voice seemed to be lacking. The writing wasn't as good as her other stories. The sex was mediocre. The flow felt off. Overall, I wasn't very happy about it. I did like the characters. The cover is beautiful. And I adore this author's work as a whole, she has a wonderful ability to flesh out a seemingly pure erotic story and make it perfection. Although that wasn't showcased here.
Looking forward to more by her.

Love this series!
By tercat57 (Teri)
I've loved every book I've read in this series so much that I haven't stopped reading so I can review. I immediately start another story. My kids are starving! Lol Of course, since it's a novella it doesn't have lots of action as Charlene's other stories. It's fun, with hot shifter sex. Can't beat that! I love how Tyler and Jackie meet, and Tyler's snarkiness in the beginning. Doesn't take him long to snap out of it and realize what's standing right in front of him. Truly love Charlene Hartnady's creativity. My goal is to read everything she's written.
This can be read as a stand alone book.

The mating game
By Elizabeth
Tyler is a wolf shifter in a rush to get to Sweetwater for the Christmas Festival. Why the rush? He's gotten permission to take a mate and can't wait to find her. Jackie is a veterinarian on her way home after a long shift and just a little bit preoccupied. They're lives collide literally when she hits a wolf with her car. Charlene Hartnady is always entertaining with her writing and humor and she gets it right with this book. The mistletoe was hilarious. Oh, and the chemistry between Jackie and Tyler is very hot! I really enjoyed their story and all the others in The Chosen Series.

Seven Theories of Religion, by Daniel L. Pals

Seven Theories of Religion introduces a sequence of "classic" attempts to explain religion scientifically, presenting each in brief outline and in non-technical language. It considers first the views of E.B. Tylor and James Frazer, two Victorian pioneers in anthropology and the comparative study of religion. It explores the controversial "reductionist" approaches of Freud, Marx, and Emile Durkheim, then explains the program of their most outspoken opponent, the Romanian-American scholar Mircea Eliade. Further on, it examines certain newer methods and ideas advanced by the English ethnographer E.E. Evans-Pritchard and by the American Clifford Geertz, two of the present century's most celebrated names in fieldwork anthropology. Each chapter offers biographical background, exposition of the theory, comparative analysis, and critical assessment. Easily accessible to students in introductory religion courses, Seven Theories of Religion is an enlightening treatment of this controversial and fascinating subject.

"Pals provides an incisive and lucid overview of seven of the most influential modern theories of religion. Cutting across disciplinary lines and cutting out disciplinary jargon, his book will prove invaluable for introductory and advanced courses on the nature of religion."--Robert Segal, Department of Religious Studies, Lancaster University

Excellent
By Jeff Jordan
This is a very good, even-handed look at some of the great thinkers of the last 150 years, and what they thought about the phenomenon of religion, whether Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, polytheism, etc..
These thinkers can be categorized as either "reductionist" or "non-reductionist." Tyler, Frazer, Freud, Marx, and Durkheim are reductionist. To Tyler and Frazer, religion can be reduced to "irrationality" or the "primitive mentality." Freud reduces religion to "neurosis." For Marx, religion is the "opium of the masses" and nothing more than a symptom of the "class struggle." Durkheim reduces religion to "the social"; that is, religion is society, society is religion.
Eliade is non-reductionist. He thinks religion cannot be reduced to psychology, sociology, economics, theology or anything else, but has to be seen as something unique in its own right. Eliade studies myths and other phenomenon of religion, compares them, tries to find universal similarities.
Evans-Pritchard and Geertz are also non-reductionist. But they don't try and "theorize" like Frazer or Eliade; they don't try to find the "origin" of religion. They are content to do in depth studies of particular culures.
The History of Religion, anthropology, ethnology--these are all fuzzy sciences. The debate over what religion is, how it came to be in various cultures, whether or not it is needed or unneeded, whether or not it is rational or irrational or just a product of the "prelogical" mind--all this still rages on amongst anthropologists, ethnologist, pyschologists, sociologists, and historians of religion. The reductionists vs. the non-reductionists. Who will win?
Overall, a good and fair-balanced read.

A good summary of religious thought.
By Jeff Nyman
This book was definitely a good summary of the thoughts of eight main historical figures (with a few others thrown in here and there). However, in many cases, the summaries were not so much about religion, but rather mythologies that sometimes masquerade as religion, at least in some people's opinions. For example, the ideas of Mircea Eliade, to me, are simply mythologies and barely constitute the basis of a veritable religion (and are pretty boring reading, to boot). And Karl Marx's ideas are so stepped in the socioeconomic realm that one cannot really call his work a "theory" of religion. On the other hand, the interesting work of Freud and Durkheim are specifically related to the subject of religion and are good additions to the book.
Thus, for me, this book is sort of a smattering of material that is worthwhile and entertaining reading - but may not be living up to the title of the book. As just one example, there is actually no discussion of the major thinkers who have put forward cognitive and biological hypotheses (for they are not "theories") of religion. (The section on Freud does not really count towards this because his work was not so much cognitive, as psychoanalytic.) Thus, for me, this book did not really discuss theories of religion, per se, but theories of various aspects of what some might call religion and others might call folklore, legend, or mythology.
This is a worthwhile book because you get a condensed view of the thoughts of many notable thinkers from wide ranges of disciplines (such as anthropology, sociology, etc.) but keep in mind that these are not "theories" of religion. They are, if anything, hypotheses and they are, if nothing else, only about relative aspects of various belief systems. If you are more concerned about the origins of religion (and thus a true "theory") I recommend a book like Pascal Boyer's "Religion Explained" or the books by Michael Shermer, such as "How We Believe."
Another problem I had with the book were the footnotes. Sometimes they contained just references and other times they contained material worth reading. In all cases, the "material worth reading" was short enough that it should have been placed in the main text. The constant shifting back and forth in this book made it a slower (and less entertaining) read for me than it probably otherwise would have been.
Overall, however, I think this was a well-researched book and contains a lot of good material. It just did not really cover the aspects of religion that I was hoping for.

This is a good, useful survey of major theories of religion.
By Tim Murphy (txm55@po.cwru.edu)
It is written primarily for an undergraduate audience and would work well as a text book. Theorists include: E.B.Tylor, Marx, Freud, Durkheim, Eliade, Evans-Pritchard, and Geertz. Several disciplines are brought together here in one volume--an advantage over other such books. Pals give a very standard reading of all these theorists. The biggest problem with the book is the exclusion of any discussion of structuralism. He also omits more current theorists such Althusser, Lacan, or Bataille. This makes the book somewhat dated and conservative. His standard explication is, however, very solid and clear.

Not Written by Charles Taze Russell
By Ronald Day
This book was not written by Charles Taze Russell, although it does contain a lot of quotes from Russell. It also contains much that Russell did not teach, and I am sure, that he would not have approved. The true authors of the book were Clayton J. Woodworth and George Fisher, and edited by Joseph Rutherford.

The book is significant as a historical background of the Jehovah's Witnesses as well as the Bible Students; eventually, the vast majority of the Bible Students who had been associated with Russell did not accept the unique claims of The Finished Mystery.

Bible Students to this day only attribute six volumes of "The Studies in the Scriptures" to Charles Taze Russell. The Divine Plan of the Ages (Studies in the Scriptures, Volume 1)

Imagine yourself on a beautiful afternoon, sitting on your favorite bench at the park with a dear friend. The birds are chirping melodiously in the background and the sun shines gently through the clouds. A pleasant breeze creates just the right temperature for this momentous occasion. Something special is about to happen…

As you sit next to your friend, you find yourself asking him some of your most intimate questions about the manifestation process, and sharing some of your deepest beliefs about the process. You freely share your struggles, disappointments, fears and frustrations. He listens and answers candidly, but is never judgmental. As the conversation progresses, you feel your layers of resistance and blockages melting away… Suddenly, everything just falls into place and becomes so easy for you. You have finally reached a place of new understanding.

If you had one afternoon with Richard Dotts, what questions would you ask him about manifesting your desires and the creative process? In Come and Sit With Me, bestselling author and spiritual explorer Richard Dotts candidly answers some of the most pressing questions that have been asked by his readers. Written in a free-flowing and conversational format, Richard addresses some of the most relevant issues related to manifestations and the application of these spiritual principles in our daily lives. Rather than shying away from tough questions about the manifestation process, Richard dives into them head-on and shows the readers practical ways in which they can use to avoid common manifestation pitfalls.

What ensues is an intriguing conversation that takes readers into the amazing inner world of manifestations, and a discussion filled with manifestation tips and techniques, including:

- How to desire nothing and still manifest everything in your life: Is it even possible to desire nothing in your life? What does it mean to have no desires? How do desires relate to your creative abilities?

- How to create a manifestation “portal” between your current and desired reality: You already have in your possession, all of the tools needed to do this.

- A simple technique for querying your higher self and for sifting through all the information that you come into contact with on a daily basis

- What the Manifestation Paradox is and why the effectiveness / speed of your manifestations will depend on how well you master the manifestation paradox

- Does the Universe really fulfill all your desires and manifest absolutely everything which you can possibly ask for?

- And more…

I really liked this book
By Amazon Customer
I really liked this book. It is short and to the point. At first I wasn't sure if I would like the answer and question format, but I found it to be much easier to read because I got direct answers instead of having to read pages of information on a subject. The questions were all questions everyone would ask and I resonated with most of them. After I finished reading and went to bed, my body experienced a strange vibration. I think the best message I got from this book is to ease off of a subject. Sometimes when you want something with all your heart and are desperate for it, you try so hard to obtain it. Do anything and everything possible to make it happen and get so frustrated when you don't see any results. The first thing you think is I am not doing it right, or I'm doing something wrong, or maybe I didn't earn it enough. What he teaches you here is that the very act of trying is what is blocking you. Do anything and everything you can instead to take your mind off it. That is the hardest part, especially when you are obsessing over it. I found that taking on a new interest or hobby, such as reading a book or for me collecting shells on the beach, really helped. You will find that once you stop obsessing over the thing you want most is when you will finally start to see movement - usually within a few days. At first, I thought no this can't be, if I don't think about it how will the universe know what I want? That is also a mistake. It already received your asking and declaring the first time you intended it - probably the first hundred times (since I asked every day). It knows exactly what you want already so you don't have to keep pounding it in. I think the confusion with all these teachings is some say you get what you think about, and others say to stop thinking about it. So it leaves you frustrated not know what you are supposed to be doing. The trick is to think about it in the beginning, really love and want it with all your heart and daydream about it. This usually lasts a few days. When the idea is new and exciting. This is the creation process. Once that initial excitement over having it starts to fade, that is when you let it go and stop thinking about it. You have already put it out there as this is what you want. Now let it come to you.

I will give you a small example. I was in the mall with my daughter one day and a man had a display out with sugar gliders. I thought it was the most adorable pet and my daughter and I both wanted one. But they were $400 a piece, and that's not including cage and supplies. I was disappointing. But I went home and did research on them and found out about care and training and things, and then looked on craigslist to see if I could find one cheaper from someone maybe giving one away. They were all asking hundreds of dollars as well. So I gave up the idea, knowing I didn't have the money and even if I did it would be better for me to use it towards bills. 7 months later, I got a text from a guy I used to work with. He was just an acquaintance. He was a quality control inspector and would come and go for weeks on different jobs from another state. He had gotten my number from my boss who knew I loved animals and the guy asked if I wanted not one but 2 sugar gliders with cage and accessories for FREE. I couldn't believe it. He told me he was about to return home to California with them and found out they are banned. He is not allowed to have them so he had to get rid of them quickly before he left. he made a decent amount of money so it wasn't much for him to spend on whims like that. I of course took them.

The smaller things like that are easy to get. I think because you don't invest so much in them as you do for a house, or money, or relationship. The major desires we think we have to really try hard to get. But I think if we applied the same concept they too would come easy and quickly. We just have to learn to want and then let go and let it come to us. I am still working on this practice and seeing results every day. I have signed up for KindleUnlimited and downloaded his other books. For me, I raise my vibration reading LOA material. When you feel your mind beginning to obsess and you start getting depressed, go read LOA books or listen to youtube videos on the subject. It will take your mind off it and raise your vibration.

It All Makes Sense Now...
By Kiwi
There is so much in this book I don't even know where to start! I really like Richard Dotts' work and this latest book is one of the best. He has gone through the process of putting all the techniques into practice and working his way through the frustrations that I have encountered. This somehow makes it all more 'realistic' and not just the 'think positively and you will become a millionaire' style of personal development. As the author says there are many ways to raise your own level of consciousness and his style definitely appeals to me. There are new techniques here even if you have read vast amounts of this genre. I am going to read it again which I almost never do, there is so much great advice in here. Thankyou Richard!

Another softly informative read by Dotts
By Hellion On Wheels
Richard Dotts is one of the best contemporary authors of explaining how "the law of attraction" actually works in our lives. His explanations are almost always gentle and often not at all what we would expect.

The gist of this book is how to let go of the concept of an outcome in order to best facilitate outward manifestations. In the words of the great Neville Goddard, this is basically about arriving at the point of "attention minus effort."

This short guide can easily be understood by anyone serious about manifesting. Highly recommended.

Amazon.com Review
Dominique Lapierre was one of the pioneers of the subjective news story, a man who was never afraid to put himself, both physically and emotionally, at the heart of his reports. It is a style that has often been imitated, but as A Thousand Suns shows, it has seldom been bettered. In 1944, Lapierre won his own footnote in history by misdirecting the German tanks and accelerating the liberation of Paris by two days. You could argue that ever since, he has been making sure that other people get the credit they deserve.

A Thousand Suns is both a personal memoir and a testament to the notable characters Lapierre met along the way, from the great and the good, such as Mother Teresa, to the infamous (such as Caryl Chessman, who was executed in San Quentin in 1960), to the more anonymous. Throughout, Lapierre is always looking for the personal details that make the stories come alive. And he finds them. He discovers that General von Choltitz, the Nazi in charge of occupied Paris, had had an overcoat made in the summer of 1944 "because he thought it would be cold in a POW camp." Kozo Okamato, the only surviving Red Army Faction (RAF) member to bomb Lod airport, tells him he became a terrorist after being dumped twice by girlfriends. "At the time the RAF seemed a less demanding lover." These are the insights that animate Lapierre's work, and he is never afraid to find the humanity in even the most apparently evil of people.

However, this tendency is both a virtue and his undoing, as Lapierre sometimes allows his obvious affection for his subject to cloud all judgment. An example can be found in his accounts of Lord Mountbatten of Burma. Mountbatten was a known charmer, but his record on the partition of India does not bear scrutiny. His fudging of the boundaries, and the speed with which he acted, was undoubtedly a significant factor in the mass bloodshed that followed. Lapierre lets him off the hook with a single sentence: "By extricating his country from the Indian wasps' nest without spilling a drop of British blood, Mountbatten had saved Great Britain from one of those colonial wars of which France had made a speciality." Even for a partisan observer, this simply will not do. But a journalist who cares too much is always preferable to one who doesn't care at all, and Lapierre especially so, for the range and depth of his reportage, if nothing else. He harks back to a more innocent age when public figures were more open and trusting; few journalists would get anything like the access to equivalent figures today. Enjoy him, warts and all. You won't see his like again. --John Crace, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly
Blending autobiographical memoir and popular history, French journalist Lapierre's (City of Joy) engrossing chronicle focuses on men and women whose courage, determination or resistance made a difference. Many of these movers and shakers are people he interviewed and highlighted in his previous bestselling books. Some of them fit awkwardly into the narrative's overall heroic mold: Spanish bullfighter Manuel Benites El Cordobes brings out Lapierre's corny side; Nazi general Dietrich von Choltitz, who refused to carry out Hitler's orders to raze Paris, was, as Lapierre notes, unaware of the imminent arrival of reinforcements. But we do get real heroes, including Mahatma Gandhi, Raphael Matta (a Parisian businessman who became an African game reserve warden and was eventually murdered by poachers) and Ehud Avriel (the refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria who helped engineer the clandestine mass immigration of European Jews to the fledgling state of Israel). Though long-winded at times, Lapierre tells incredible tales of true-life adventure, and he is a valuable eyewitness to history, whether he is joining castaways in the mass exodus of Algeria's French population following that colony's independence or making an unprecedented automobile trip across the USSR in 1956. A bestseller in France, Italy and Spain, this book humanizes many of the cataclysmic events of the tumultuous century now ending. Agent, Morton Janklow.

From Kirkus Reviews
An intriguing, albeit subjective, look at some of this century's most interesting people. Lapierre (The City of Joy, 1985, etc.) has had the writing gig of the century. As a reporter for Paris Match, among other periodicals, he has traveled the world and chronicled some seminal historical moments. Here he recounts meetings with everyone from Mother Teresa to Mahatma Gandhi. Particularly rivetingand grippingly writtenis a chapter on the last days of death-row inmate Caryl Chessman, who insisted on his innocence to his dying breath. Lapierre interviews Chessman six times and records firsthand each last-ditch effort to save the man, who eluded execution eight times in 12 years. The California judge's call to stay the execution one last time reached the prison five seconds after the cyanide pills had been dropped into the sulfuric acid. Interspersed with the ``interviews'' is Lapierre's own story, which raises this quibble: The book seems a tad self-serving at times. Was the famous bullfighter El Cordobes really a vital 20th-century figureone of the ``thousand suns'' referred to in the Indian proverb from which the book derives its titleor is he a convenient, albeit fascinating, means to remind the reader that Lapierre and Larry Collins wrote a book (Or I'll Dress You in Mourning) based on their Reader's Digest profile of the Spaniard? Still, the book is lively and Lapierre a terrific tour guide. Besides, it's hard to dislike an author who has used millions of dollars in book royalties to help bring medical care to desperately indigent people in Calcutta, a point Lapierre carefully annotates in an appendix that outlines the work he has accomplished there and in the Ganges Delta before giving addresses for readers who want to make donations. Memoir or selective chronicle of a century? Regardless, you'll keep reading. (30 b&w photos) -- Copyright 1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Make Your Hobby Your Profession ! ! ! ! ! ! !
By Datar
1. 'A Thousand Suns', a fascinating book by Dominique Lapierre, famous author of books like `Is Paris Burning' and `City of Joy' takes its title from and Indian proverb that the author chanced upon during his stay in South India. It comes from (as indicated by the author) "Behind every cloud, there are a thousand suns". A perfect message for life in present day's gloomy outlook of life.

2. It goes without saying that the book, which has such a beautiful and motivating title ought to be full of life energy and epitomize everything that is the very essence of meaningful life. This book actually is a byproduct, but a beautiful and useful one. It consists of 15 independent well researched real life stories, which the author encountered in the run up to doing a specific assignment mainly related to the prime characters or places related to these stories, initially as a news correspondent and later as a writer.

3. At the end thus, he filed his reports / wrote his books, but the enduring beauty of life enshrined in the background of these reports / books remained. The author has really done a wonderful service to mankind by writing this book; else such beautiful pearls of human endeavor, wisdom, perseverance and enterprise would have been lost forever.

4. Written in a simple style with stress on delivering the message right, the author might have not achieved perfection of narrative, but what needed to be achieved i.e. delivery of the essentials of beauty of life has been achieved with perfection.

5. It is rightly said that `make your hobby your profession and you would not have to work for a day'. It is evident from reading this book that Mr Lapierre seems to have not worked for a day but have thoroughly enjoyed this life following his passion for writing.

6. All those who have faith in life and mankind and all those whose faith on these is wavering for some reasons must read this book to derive the requisite benefit.

A rivetting, if not accurate, read
By Karina Bray
This dude knows how to write. Throughout the book, his passion, respect and sometimes joy as he describes life's adventures and the amazing people he has met permeate his writing. He brings the events to life, makes them very real.
In particular, his horrific account of the death of Caryl Chessman brought tears to my eyes. How could it be that in a so-called civilised country such deaths continue? I was outraged and appalled to learn from Lapierre that of the 500 death executions since 1977, 'seventy-five concerned men and women whose innocence was proven after their death.' 75 innocent people killed! Mon dieu! Er no, actually -- I've since found out from various anti-death penalty web sites that in fact 75 (or now around 85) people were released (ALIVE) from death row after their innocence was proven. The distinction, I think, is rather important!
He also claims that 'California has remained faithful to its gas chambers' as a manner of execution. As far as I could find out from various government and anti-death penalty web sites, California uses primarily, if not solely, lethal injection to dispose of its unwanted citizens.
Lapierre's account of 'tarantulas as hairy as apes' in Africa would excite ecologists -- who perhaps foolishly think wild tarantulas exist only in the Americas -- as much as his (unfortunately mistaken) sighting of a rhinoceros excited his host in the Ivory Coast.
Characterising Mohatma Gandhi with temporal accuracy, if somewhat dismissively, as 'an elderly half-naked Indian...living in poverty' no doubt adds credence to his amazement at the 'miraculous alchemy' and mutual understanding that existed between Gandhi and Lord Mountbatten. But is it really so miraculous when one considers that the middle-class Gandhi had studied for and received a law degree from London University and practiced as a barrister in South Africa for 20 years? Is it so miraculous that two educated men with experience in and a good understanding of each other's cultures could then understand each other?
Obviously any account of events is going to carry some subjectivity, like his rather derogatory characterisation of Gandhi, but it's disturbing when things presented as facts, like the huge number of innocent death row victims, are blatantly incorrect. It made me wonder how many other factual errors I'd inadvertantly absorbed as truth.
Nevertheless, it is great read, lively and interesting, and his contribution to the welfare of the poorest of the poor in India goes beyond admirable. Just take the 'facts' with a grain of salt!

a must for anyone who has ever read a Lapierre book!
By A Customer
This wonderful series of adventures and relationships brings the reader into the fascinating world of Dominique Lapierre. He carries us back through his many and widely varied "assignments" as a journalist and author over the last 50 +years. Dominique and his wife shared many of the experiences .He makes you feel he is talking directly to you and sharing feelings that are close to his heart. Anyone who has ever read "City of Joy" and was moved by the story of Calcutta slums will really be interested in the background stories he provides which lead the writing of the book. I was only familiar with the author through his "City of Joy" book but after finishing "A Thousand Suns" I am anxious to read his other books. Longtime fans of the author will certainly relish this latest addition to their Lapierre library but anyone reading these stories will be caught up in the author's ability to evoke a sense of hope in seemingly hopeless situations.

The Land Without A Banking Law: How To Start A Bank With A Thousand Dollars, by Michael Magnusson

Would you like to start your own Online Bank and offer banking services to clients worldwide? Although the total investment required for setting up a banking business, just as any other business, obviously varies depending on the business model, it is quite possible to form and register a business entity with full legal capacity to offer banking services, for a total cost of less than one thousand dollars, just as the perhaps somewhat controversial subtitle of this book indicates. While there are laws in New Zealand regulating financial activities, there are no regulatory entry barriers as such for the business of banking when services are offered to non-residents only (offshore). This book will teach you how to register a New Zealand business entity online with legal capacity to offer banking services to any number of clients, resident anywhere in the world. Step by step instructions are included. The regulatory framework and upcoming changes to the relevant legislation are explained.

Clear, detailed, and much more than a text-book
By David Hillary
Mr Magnusson writes as the master who worked on creating these structures for many years, but includes so much more than the black-letter law (or lack thereof), and the 'how to' of structuring free-banking type financial institutions: he addresses the politics, the fear, the misinformation, the stereotypes, the bad press, the questionable official actions and responses that go with this territory.

You see, when an area of commerce or life become subject to government regulation and supervision, in the name of consumer protection, financial safety, financial stability, anti-money laundering, tax compliance and similar cover-stories, it becomes a special case, a case where most people think that such regulation is necessary and justified, and forget (or never knew) that there are much more subtle and indirect ways people manage risks and other concerns. They view trial and error as a failure because it involves error, and thereby become blind to the benefits of the freedom to try new business models, product strategies, market structures and so forth.

Another problem in this area is governments regulating because other countries do. This disease affects New Zealand as much as any other, however in this area it remains an exception, in addition to having no deposit insurance.

Magnusson's perspective is not that of 'most people', thankfully he presents and defends freedom in the financial services area, notwithstanding that it implies some people will abuse the freedom and that some financial institutions will fail and their creditors will incur losses, in addition to outlining the parameters of the financial services freedom in New Zealand law for international deposit taking and banking services.

This book is primarily addressed to the financial services entrepreneur, or potential financial services entrepreneur, as an excellent guide to the lay of the land, the potential benefits of using this jurisdiction for international financial services, the steps involved, and the practical pitfalls and issues that tend to arise. Magnusson shows that New Zealand is (and it remains) an attractive jurisdiction to base a range of international financial services from. Without regulatory supervision, and without restrictive rules, you can focus on structuring and delivering your services in a way that takes advantage of your opportunities and connections, and on meeting your customers needs rather than seeking permission or reporting against mandates that you never wanted to accept in the first place.

If you're ready for freedom in financial services business, this book is a must read -- who knows, you may end up doing the best thing for freedom: using it well!
