So basically, if you're a "newbie" (i detest the word...its very negative and snooty) to Nirvana and just want the inside story without really wading through all the websites and detailed books (not to mention "die-hard" fans mocking you for not knowing the story behind "Teen Spirit"), then this book is for you. The basic story is there, told with a sort of fairy-tale wonder. Great pictures too. There are some nice excerpts from interviews, but they are pretty contradictory in the profile they construct. But overal, a very good primer for the uninitiated. Don't be ashamed for not knowing much, we all have to start somewhere. Go entertain yourselves.

Good textbook - helpful teaching style that made learning easier. Chapters built upon each other through the book and allows for good learning capacity. Incredible MS Project Reference

One of the best reference books I have ever read (and I have read a lot of them). The authors take you 'step by step' through every critical feature in MS Project. The procedures are very straightforward; there is virtually no way to screw up their instructions. Even if you know nothing about project management, you will have no trouble with this book. In fact, this book will teach you more than how to use MS Project, it will also teach you about project management. I really can't say enough positive things about this book.

My only small criticism is that many of the figures are not labeled. I found myself labeling some of the more ambiguous figures myself.

Nonetheless, I still have no trouble giving this book 5 stars.

Basic but useful

You are probably like me, thinking that you would never need a general reference book on the Internet. You've been around from the start, before there was even elm, and you know your way around a Unix prompt. But really, how long has it been since you had to use elm and the vi editor? Now that you've got Eudora to handle your email, and you've been following each successive release of Netscape Navigator to play with JAVA and VRML, chances are that it's been a few years since you had to stare at a % and type a command. I know because I've been there--my company sent me to Santa Fe, New Mexico for two weeks on a job assignment and I was adrift without my PPP connection. I found Zuma's Electronic Cafe, an Internet cafe (a place where you can rent time on a computer with an Internet connection), but to check my mail at my home system I was forced to rely on telnet. I remembered how to get connected, and I remembered how to run elm, but as soon as I went to reply to a message and got thrown into a character based editor, I had to admit that I was stumped. Was it CTRL-C to exit, or the ESC key?
That's where a book like Paul E. Hoffman's The Internet Instant Reference: Third Edition [1] can come in handy. Hoffman covers those little known commands for the remaining popular character-based software for dealing with the Internet, programs like ee, elm, ftp, lynx, nn, rn, tin, and vi, along with a brief history of the creation of the Internet, the bodies that "govern" it, and coverage of every major Internet focus. There's likely to come a time when a book like this will be unnecessary, given the trend on the Internet to more graphic-based programs that have help for users built-in to the applications themselves. Georgescu-Roegen: a missed Nobel prize

Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen's fame is due to his book The Entropy Law and Economic Process (1971) in which NGR conjugates thermodynamics and economics. But his importance for political economy goes far before the publication of this book and involves many different aspects of the analysis. While the complete theoretical framework described by NGR has been frequently contested, his analysis of the production process has been considered as truly innovative and useful, by many points of view.

Brilliant, but not Perfect

It must be admitted that Georgescu-Roegen's understanding of entropy was flawed. He, along with many other authors including physicists, thought entropy was a measure of disorder. It is not. That entropy is not a measure of disorder is discussed in a recent scholarly article by chemistry Prof. Frank Lambert, who has a nice web site devoted to the topic. More to the point, it was also discussed in Beard and Lozada's book about Georgescu-Roegen (p. 88, "Economics, Entropy, and the Environment: The Extraordinary Economics of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen"). It's not easy to say what entropy actually is, but it is straightforward for scientists to measure that, say, the standard entropy of one mole of iron (about 55.8 grams of iron) is 27.7 Joules per Kelvin.

While Georgescu wasn't completely right about all of entropy's aspects, his attacks on Boltzmann's H-Theorem, and on the "information as entropy" school, show completely correct understanding of other aspects of entropy. Furthermore, in his indictment of neoclassical dynamic economics, he was the vanguard of critics who decry slavish devotion to mathematical models which assume we know the future (at least probabalistically). Absorbing Georgescu's lessons would've spared Economics Nobel Laureates Merton and Scholes their disastrous experience running the failed hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management (described in the book "When Genius Failed"): change happens, the past does not always predict the future, and the consequences of one's actions sometimes cannot be imagined by anyone. When investing money, that's a good perspective; when talking about man's effect on the environment, as Georgescu was, it's a perspective that could save the planet.
