About the Author

Eric Sheninger�is a Senior Fellow and Thought Leader on Digital Leadership with the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE) and Scholastic Achievement Partners (SAP). �He also maintains a presence as a practitioner by serving as the K-12 Director of Technology and Innovation in the Spotswood School District (NJ). �Prior to this he was the award-winning Principal at New Milford High School. �Under his leadership his school became a globally recognized model for innovative practices. �Eric oversaw the successful implementation of several sustainable change initiatives that radically transformed the learning culture at his school while increasing achievement. �

Outstanding Book! Uncommon Learning: From "Why?" to "How?"

I just finished this outstanding book by Eric Sheninger, one of the leading educational thinkers in the world today. The title of the book is perfect, as throughout it, Sheninger makes the case that we need to make dramatic changes in our schools and classrooms, moving beyond the "common" to more relevant, authentic, innovative, and student-centered experiences. Although such practices are currently "uncommon," if we read Eric's book, we have a roadmap for changing the status quo and making "uncommon learning" the norm. Throughout this book, Sheninger offers practical, proven ideas for transforming our classrooms, libraries, and school cultures. He draws on both his past experiences as principal of an award-winning high school as well as his current experiences working with educators around the globe, sharing lessons learned from both that can be replicated by others hoping to improve educational experiences for both students and teachers. This book is clearly written and organized. It starts by making the case for why we must change the way we do school. Then, it proceeds with chapter-by-chapter examples of creating specific "uncommon" learning experiences. In each of these chapters, Sheninger offers specific stories and examples showing the "how" of change. In the final chapter, "Schools that Work for Students," Sheninger is at his best, offering a call to action so that our kids' learning experiences are ones that make them actually want to come to school. Specifically, he offers eight ways to move uncommon learning experiences forward in our schools. I recommend this book for educators desiring the best for students we serve and looking for specific tips on how to do so.

Eric Sheninger has done it again! UnCommon Learning is the second coming of Digital Leadership with a spin learning spaces in the physical and virtual world. Topics like digital badging and blended learning spaces are brought to life in such a way that readers can put into action the next day in their schools or districts. UnCommon Learning changes the educational conversation and paves the way for all schools stakeholders to understand that the initiatives explained in the book that must become commonplace on a global scale. Kudos to Eric Sheninger for writing yet another inspiring book for educators from all walks of life to read and ultimately impact the success of all students.

Summarises complex concepts simply with good examples

Author has managed to cover many relevant topics that one picks up over decades of working and explain in a simple fashion. I really liked the personal examples he has given from stalwart Indian companies like Tata and HLL. The underlying themes are consistent with age old wisdom, in this case he has given them the nomenclature of the 4A's. read the book to find out what they are :)

Still, the book's home base is a scrubby North London borough, where we encounter Smith's unlikely heroes: prevaricating Archie Jones and intemperate Samad Iqbal, who served together in the so-called Buggered Battalion during World War II. In the ensuing decades, both have gone forth and multiplied: Archie marries beautiful, bucktoothed Clara--who's on the run from her Jehovah's Witness mother--and fathers a daughter. Samad marries stroppy Alsana, who gives birth to twin sons. Here is multiculturalism in its most elemental form: "Children with first and last names on a direct collision course. Names that secrete within them mass exodus, cramped boats and planes, cold arrivals, medical checks."

Big questions demand boldly drawn characters. Zadie Smith's aren't heroic, just real: warm, funny, misguided, and entirely familiar. Reading their conversations is like eavesdropping. It was a deal, a business proposition, that he had made with God: Samad being the party of the first part, God being the sleeping partner. And since that day Samad had enjoyed relative spiritual peace and many a frothy Guinness with Archibald Jones; he had even developed the habit of taking his last gulp looking up at the sky like a Christian, thinking: I'm basically a good man. Not all of White Teeth is so amusingly carnal. The mixed blessings of assimilation, for example, are an ongoing torture for Samad as he watches his sons grow up. "They have both lost their way," he grumbles. "Strayed so far from what I had intended for them. No doubt they will both marry white women called Sheila and put me in an early grave." Smith (recently profiled in an issue of The New Yorker) has written an epic tale of two interconnected families. It begins with the suicide attempt of hapless, coin-flipping Archibald Jones on New Year's Day, 1975, and ends, after a 100-year ramble back and forth through time, on New Year's Eve, 1992, with his accidental (or preordained?) release of a poor mutant mouse programmed to do away with the randomness of creation. Smith evokes images of teeth throughout the novel. Do they symbolize some characteristic shared by all of humanity in this novel about ethnicity, class, belonging, homeland, family, adolescence, identity, blindness, and ignorance? Or are they meant to distract the reader from the all-encompassing theme of fate? Smith's characters are tossed about by decisions made deliberately, rashly, or by the flip of a coin. As Smith pieces together this story with bits of fabric from different times and places, the reader must contemplate whether our choices determine our future or whether fate leads us to an inevitable destiny. This fine first novel from Smith is most highly recommended for all libraries.

Excellent

This was a really great novel. I am a bit puzzled by some of the luke-warm reviews that I've read on Amazon. Please do not be discouraged from reading White Teeth yourself.

The novel follows characters from three main families --the Jones, Iqbals and Chalfens--creating a narrative that spans multiple generations, and relationships. However the expansive ambition of the plot does not way down the novel as the reader is treated to Zadie Smith's wit and imperfect yet endearing characters. My absolute favorite part of this book was the dialog between characters which often times had me laughing out loud (something I rarely do when I read).

White Teeth is a fantastic reflection on friendships, families, the clashing and blending of culture and the ways in which one generation affects the trajectories of the next.

Ordinary people, extraordinary events

One would like to think that we can control where our lives take us. There are too many unexpected events that make this a difficult task-----our parentage, our marriages, our children, our culture, our jobs, our belief systems, and on and on. The array of people in this book are both both helpless victims of their life circumstances , but also architects who shape their lives often leaving themselves disappointed and enraged. I'm giving this story 3 1/2 stars. Zadie Smith writes with a breathless intensity and likewise develops colourful , complicated fully fleshed out characters. The intensity of idea in this book leaves the reader breathless and sometimes frustrated. All the characters are flawed, and often unlikable. This book is so chock full of ideas & relationships that this becomes the source of the readers frustration---the immigrant experience, marriage, work, war, friendship, parent/child relationships, the male/ female battles, science vs religion , and so on. For sure, the author has an amazing gift for language and bringing her characters to life.

1) Plot (2 stars) – If taken linearly, White Teeth is the story of two unlikely battalion mates thrown together during the Second World War, who proceed to marry much younger women during their mid-life crises years, sire offspring who become entangled, and it all culminates in an anti-climactic mess of familial fears and hopes and regrets. But it’s not linear. Smith jumbles this narrative, rearranging the pieces to make an interesting collage. But an interesting collage cannot substitute for a plot. And the lack of tension, purpose, and destination made me dawdle in my reading, just consuming a few pages here and there, until I disinterestedly turned the last page over two months later.

2) Characters (3 stars) – Archibald is the go with the flow co-lead, perhaps finding purpose in a younger woman after a failed suicide attempt. Samad is the serious scholar, feeling cheated by his immigrant’s lot in life. Sprinkled between them are wives and daughters and sons. All are unusual, and the dialogue and accents make them seem mostly real. But, their goals are so flimsy and their character so weak, it made it hard for me to enthusiastically follow them.

3) Theme (4 stars) – I believe Smith’s main message is about immigration. About how lost it makes those who do it feel, how it turns their kids into strangers, and how it leaves for those kids a hodgepodge of morals to try to piece together to form some sort of path for life.

4) Voice (4 stars) – This for me was the highlight of the book, and why I kept reading. Smith’s prose is energetic, playful, insightful, and creative. The smallest of details are made fresh and interesting when described through her pen. The only reason I wouldn’t give this component 5 stars is that I felt like 20% of the book could have been edited away and not lost anything. If it were streamlined just a bit, I think it would hold its own against the masters of the last century.

5) Setting (4 stars) – London. But not the rich center of global commerce. Instead, it’s about the mishmash of flotsam that stick to the rich core. The Caribbeans, the Muslims, the poor white blokes. All mashed together. It was really done quite well, and made me feel like I was transported to the bars, the homes, the schools.

6) Overall (4 stars) – This was a tough one. On the one hand, you have a book with almost no plot and characters with little redeeming traits. On the other, you have an amazing snapshot of multicultural life, captured in fresh and often beautiful prose. In the end, I think the pros outweigh the cons in this book, and I would recommend it.

About the Author

Rob Brotherton is an academic psychologist and science writer who likes to walk on the weird side of psychology. Rob completed a doctoral degree on the psychology of conspiracy theories, and taught classes on why people believe weird stuff and science communication as a member of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmiths, University of London. He now lives in New York City.

Are we caught in a trap? No, we just have suspicious minds.

Conspiracy theories are everywhere, now more than ever. Or so it seems. From JFK to 9/11, from Sandy Hook to the Soviet Union, from Alex Jones to Donald Trump, conspiracy theories are on the tips of people's tongues and the headlines of mainstream news. But, as this book shows, this is actually nothing new. Conspiracy thinking has always been with us and presumably always will be. What we need is a guide to help us understand why this is, and why there's more at work in our perceptions than merely gathering information and drawing an objective conclusion.

I have been researching the Kennedy assassination for 25 years, with a fair amount of study of other conspiracy theories and related subjects, like belief in pseudoscience and the paranormal. I started out as a conspiracy believer (at least as far as JFK was concerned), but ultimately I changed my mind. Ever since, one of the burning questions for me has been how I fell under the sway of that mindset.

Rob Brotherton has done an excellent job of laying out the evidence that there are fundamental reasons we believe in conspiracy theories, and conspiracy thinking is anything but the irrational behavior of people on the fringe. Rather, we have psychological dispositions that make us hyper-vigilant against threats and conspiracies, in reading patterns in the information we receive -- so much so, that we may see such patterns even when they aren't real. This is not just one author's opinion; Brotherton draws on scientific research to make his case. The results are illuminating and thought-provoking.

The book is not a personal attack against conspiracy theorists, as Brotherton himself insists. It very specifically and explicitly rejects the stereotype of the tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy nut. He emphasizes the factors that makes conspiracy thinking very common and natural. He also does not attempt to debunk specific conspiracy theories (although he does single out a few that are of particular historical significance). The point of the book is to show that, while conspiracy theorists maintain that their theories arise from evidence, there's more at work in our brains than we are aware of. We need to keep these factors in mind as we evaluate the world around us. Some things may be exactly as they seem, but sometimes our minds play tricks on us. It doesn't make us stupid or crazy; it makes us human.

You don't have to be a student of conspiracy theories or conspiracy thinking to benefit from this book. If you're curious about why conspiracy theories are so prevalent and why they're so compelling -- to John (or Jane) Q. Public, world leaders, or, well, you yourself -- you'll find this both a lucid, well researched study, and an enjoyable read as well. I recommend it most highly.

We all ‘err on the side of suspicion’ -- and for good reason

Especially in today’s political climate, and magnified by the reinforcing and isolating nature of social media, those who believe conspiracy theories are often in the news. And just as often, they are blithely dismissed as paranoid kooks inhabiting the fringe in their bunkers, while wearing tinfoil hats. The author does his best to make it clear we are all, in some way, paranoid conspiracists. His point is that our brains have been shaped by evolution to take for granted the mechanisms, the neural pathways, that make paranoia an advantage for survival.

“… the scientific method doesn’t come naturally to us. Our brain evolved to interpret patterns quickly and decisively.” And that comes into play as we muddle our way through a world in which we are desperate to find meaning and surrounded by near infinite amounts of data begging to be sorted and, when possible, linked. Under those circumstances, “buying into a conspiracy is the cognitive equivalent of seeing meaning in randomness.” It’s a very advantageous trait that allows us to see, for example, the patterns of the face of hungry a tiger mixed in with foliage and make a quick turnaround.

Equally important, conspiracies make those who harbor them feel like there is meaning in the universe because “It is supremely unsatisfying to think that our good or bad fortune is nothing more than blind chance…”

I was especially struck by the examination of just how much credit conspiracy theories give to the other side. “… conspiracy theorists seem to have ‘startling faith in the capabilities of their enemies.’ At the very least, they propose that when the conspirators set events in motion they are able to predict how things will unfold with seemingly clairvoyant foresight.” It’s puzzling how much power is given away to the faceless Illuminati, especially given the evidence we have daily of how blessed hard it is for humans to keep their mouths shut and cover up anything, really.

He builds an interesting and very convincing theory, but one that is only ever treated at a superficial level. There are many, many examples of often fascinating conspiracies from ancient days to the modern era (JFK, Obama birthers, 911, the moon landing), all presented in an engaging writing style. It’s fun, and fascinating and also a little unnerving — those who are most entrenched in the deepest conspiracies find reinforcement in the lack of supportive evidence — but I would have liked a bit more depth and rigor around the cognitive science the many psychological studies quoted. Still, well worth the read.
