A terrific, pioneering piece of work!

Even today in 2013, when someone has the courage to mention that they've been through a `spiritual' or `mystical' experience, people tend to look at them with either (1) severe skepticism, or (2) a sense of wide-eyed naivety that any such experience must be wonderful. In truth, what many people are going through today are spiritual experiences which are quite difficult to manage. These experiences can leave us feeling very afraid, or so overwhelmingly illuminated that we may feel that we are the Messiah here to save the world. It should come as no surprise that some (not all) of these life-changing experiences end with a traumatic trip to the psychiatric hospital and an inappropriate diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Fortunately, beginning in the 1980's, a small group of pioneering mental health providers began to realize that what may look like mental illness may be a very difficult "Spiritual Emergency" which, if allowed to progress largely free of medication and in a caring hospitable environment, may bring about a true positive transformation in the person in crisis, bringing the individual to a higher level of functioning as a more caring, wise human being.

The Spiritual Emergency Network (SEN) is an organization founded by Christina Grof (wife of pioneering transpersonal psychiatrist, Dr. Stanislav Grof) which was intended to help people find support while going through these difficult spiritual processes. Among the small group of pioneers who brought this condition to light, was Emma Bragdon, a "Founding Mother" of the Spiritual Emergency movement, and one of the most active in ushering this category of emotional crisis into the public eye.

Emma's book, The Call of Spiritual Emergency, was one of the original texts on this subject. Eloquently written, the new 2013 edition brings to the reader a series of remarkable, real life examples of how these difficult spiritual crises can manifest in many different aspects of our lives, with a wide range of intensity. Perhaps most importantly, Emma writes not only as a therapist herself, but as someone who has had a number of spiritual experiences, including a spiritual emergency in her own life. In the first chapter she writes, in detail of some of her own experiences which left her at some moments in a state of ecstasy, and then in others, terrified. Like others, once the experience has passed, she also asked "what to do with it?" As you will read, the struggle to integrate such experiences back into everyday living can be easier said than done, but Emma offers well grounded, clear suggestions that can apply to most people.

After sharing her story, Emma goes on to tell the stories of many others, in an easy to read, compassionate way. Perhaps the strongest aspect of her book is that, while the psychological theory is there, it is touched on lightly, always referring back to colorful narratives to stress her point. The stories she tells leave you feeling as if you are right there with the person going through what is often a fascinating, harrowing, deeply personal experience. Sometimes stories come from people she has met in her everyday life. Other times they come from famous mystics of the past, like St. Teresa of Avila, who underwent very difficult spiritual processes in her life.

Emphasizing how spiritual emergencies can arise in various aspects of our lives, Emma shares stories of spiritual emergencies happening in athletics, childbirth, physical illness, near-death experiences, self-help workshops... even sex!

In her introduction to this new edition, Emma describes how she has seen the concept of Spiritual Emergency broaden since the first edition, written over twenty years ago. As she illustrates beautifully throughout the book, the spiritual dimension (and difficulties!) of existence can now be seen as touching all aspects of our lives.

Without a doubt, anyone who reads this book from cover to cover will rethink their old ideas regarding what is, and is not, a spiritual experience and how to negotiate the disorientation that can come from such experiences.

Emma Bragdon continues to help many people through her unique voice. She's a great combination of professionalism and down to earth practicality. As a person who has been through an 80-day period of awakening, I can say that this author was instrumental in helping me shape a new perspective on what it means to heal. Anyone working with consciousness would benefit from her message, and I believe her work will continue to be critical in the coming years.

Excellent Contribution

The ambiguous dance between grace and free-will lost a step with the recent passing of Stephen Duffy's life. His book, The Dynamics of Grace: Perspectives in Theological Anthropology, is a most stimulating perspective on the partnership of grace with free-will. As a former student of Duffy's at Loyola of New Orleans, I could clearly see his knowing wit and smile percolate through words of angst in describing God's revelation. This book is a gift to all serious theologians.

For Duffy, revelation is more than an arbitrary Bartian thunderbolt that crashes through reality and also more than a Neo-Platonic reflection of past experiences. Likewise, the dynamic between grace and free will describes a moving relationship beyond an understanding of one versus the other. It is dynamic.

Duffy's book brings readers face-to-face with the contributions and discrepancies of systematic theologians who embrace the study of grace with a passion and love which shall endure the bonds of this life.

Poetry is back!

At its best poetry has been the bridge that connects the said and the unsaid, and this is the place we find ourselves with Rooney's book. With striking descriptiveness and provocative imagery, Rooney has given the world something tangible here...With poetry these days being hit or miss, Rooney scores a definitive bulls eye. Fathers and sons, lovers, fighters. It's all in here. Nothing but meat on this bone. Incredible!

About the Author

Jonathon Scott Payne is a retired US Air Force officer who is currently employed as an engineer for the US Army. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and his master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Florida. In 1992, he graduated from the US Air Force Test Pilot School as a flight test engineer.

Payne served three years with the Canadian Forces during his time in the US Air Force, has flown more than thirty-five types of military and civilian aircraft, and has logged over sixty extremely hazardous flight test missions.

He and his wife live in Madison, Alabama, where they enjoy riding their Harley-Davidson motorcycles and looking after the most spoiled rotten cats in the entire world—and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

This is a heart warming special read

I was asked to review this book by the author. I edited the book, thus it will not show that I have purchased this from Amazon.

I am amazed at the quality of writing Jonny has put into his first book. This is a story about Jonny and his VERY interesting life and career, his family, his cats, and his very special cat, Mighty Little Man. I believe that men and women will both find it very interesting reading and any animal lover will be crying and laughing right along with those of us who had any part in putting this together.

I can honestly say that I observed Jonny's heart and soul went into every word and I look forward to seeing more from this author. I hope he will take a deep breath and plunge into more writing.

A cat with personality!

For anyone who shares their home with animals, this book will make them laugh, cry, and nod their head in understanding. It truly is Jonny's story, Little Man's story, their story. As the tale unfolds, we discover Jonny's interesting history and follow the development of his lifelong love and compassion for animals. We become part of the family. And then Little Man joins the tale... and takes over the story.

We share the ups and downs of Jonny's journey with a special cat, Little Man. For those who think cats have no personality, I challenge you to read this book without a change of heart! Little Man is quite the character! Jonny's tells the stories so many of us can understand, stories that highlight the human-animal bond and the joy it brings. Our lives are enriched through the pets who share our homes, Little Man and Jonny illustrate that perfectly. I look forward to following the story of Little Man and wish him (and Jonny) all the best!

True Animal Lover

If ever I were any type of animal, I would certainly want Jonny and his family to be my owner. I have no doubt that I would have the best care that any animal could ever have. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story written by my old high school friend - Jonny and I go back to junior high through graduation from high school. There were many parts of his story that I knew before reading this book and a whole lot more that I did not know. I have never been a "cat person" and rest assured I am still not, but this story is touching and truly amazing. Thank you, Jonny, for sharing this with all of your readers. You are truly an inspiration to animal lovers and the epitome of "don't ever give up."
