LESLIE C. ALLEN is Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary. Formerly he was Lecturer in Hebrew, Aramaic & Judaism at London Bible College, where he has taught since 1960. He holds the M.A. degree from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in Classics & Oriental Studies. His Ph.D. is from the Univ. College of London, in Hebrew. Among his publications are The Greek Chronicles Parts 1 and 2 and The Books of Joel, Obadiah, Jonah and Micah for The NIC.

Title and book cover image don't match

The pictured book is not Evolutionary Biology, 3rd edition, but rather the first edition of Evolution, a different and later book by the same author. Evolutionary Biology is more of a graduate level book, while Evolution is more undergraduate. Both are very good, but I wouldn't order until you know which book you're getting/

The book's information is good, the book was a bit more damaged than I expected. THe cover was half ripped off and several internal pages were mailed folded. The product also took a bit long in coming, but it was from overseas so I can't expect everything.

The dealer was technically fair, but I do not think I would use them again if given the choice.

Brimming with facts and translations of actual cuneiform tablets

Years ago I somehow acquired the idea that the Assyrians were a fierce and brutal warrior society whose military had conquered much of the ancient Near East that lay between the kingdoms of Ur and the mighty Hittite Empire of Anatolia. This idea was reinforced when I visited such museums as the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Oriental Institute in Chicago and the British Museum in London and viewed the awesome reliefs and monumental winged Lammasu, an Asssyrian protective deity usually depicted with the body of a lion or ox, the head of a human and the wings of a raptor, that once adorned the palaces of Assyrian kings like Ashurnasirpal II.

Recently, though, Oxford Press sent me a review copy of a small book by Karen Radner entitled "Ancient Assyria: A Very Short Introduction" and I finally had a chance to explore this culture in greater depth. What I discovered was the Assyrians had a very sophisticated culture, enjoying fine wines, a fresh water supply, indoor toilets and a well-functioning sewage system. Sounds rather Roman doesn't it? But the Assyrian culture was founded in the 3rd millenium BCE although it didn't reach its apex until the 1st millenium BCE.

I learned the Assyrians enacted consumer protection for the buyers of their goods and even offered extended warranties although we usually don't think of these extending to the sales of human beings (slave sales were subject to a 100-day guarantee against epilepsy and mental instability!)
They were rather protective of some of their inventions, though. Assyrians invented the foldable parasol but its use was restricted to royalty on pain of death!

The Assyrians were not all that brutal in the conduct of warfare either, although they were highly skilled in the use of chariots and clearly embraced nuanced deployments of chariot, cavalry, archers, slingers and infantry. The Assyrians were more interested in obtaining human resources from their conquered lands than in wholesale slaughter. Skilled craftsman and educated scholars would be sorted out and relocated to the Assyrian heartland, initially centered on the religious capital of Assur. Although slaves were sometimes taken, most conquered laborers were often relocated to areas needing colonization.

"It has been calculated on the basis of references in the royal inscriptions that 4,400,000 + or - 900,000 people were relocated from the mid-9th to the mid-7th century BC, of which 85% were settled in central Assyria - a gigantic number, especially in a world whose population was a small fraction of today's. For all of these people resettlement was meant to provide a better future while at the same time benefitting the empire. Of course, their relocation was at the same time an effective way of minimizing the risk of rebellion against the central authority."

These conquered colonists were well provisioned and reliefs depict them without fetters. An 8th century BCE letter from an official to King Tilgath-pileser III, details the provisions allocated to a group of settlers from western Syria:

"As for the Arameans about whom the king my lord has written to me: 'Prepare them for their journey!' I shall give them their food supplies, clothes, a waterskin, a pair of shoes and oil. I do not have my donkeys yet, but once they are available, I will dispatch my convoy."

Once the new colonists reached their destination, the king provided further support:

"As for the Arameans about whom the king my lord has said: 'They are to have wives!' We found numerous suitable women but their fathers refuse to give them in marriage, claiming: 'We will not consent unless they can pay the bride price.' Let them be paid so that the Arameans can get married."

Obviously the king wanted the colony to be a successful community of thriving families.

Although the above passage makes women appear to be chattel this was not necessarily the case, either. Assyrian women were allowed to engage in business and I read that if the male head-of-household ended up fathering a child with a slave, the husband could not choose to adopt the child without his wife's consent. So women obviously had some rights.

From the text, it appeared average Assyrians were primarily monogamous although traders gone from home for extended periods sometimes took a secondary wife in one of the cities along their trade route. However, such secondary wives never took precedent over the first wife.

Knowledge was revered in Assyria, so much so that by the 9th century BCE Assyrian King Assurbanipal II is depicted in reliefs in the North Palace in Nineveh with a writing stylus tucked into his belt, instead of the more usual knife. The Assyrian's great library was already in existence in the 13th century BCE, almost a thousand years before the Great Library of Alexandria. Radner tells us that when King Tukulti-Nimurta I sacked Babylon in the 13th century BCE, he records that he brought back library tablets to add to his holdings. Scholars estimate that the library collection probably extended all the way back to the 14th century BCE under the reign of King Assur-Uballit I.

So obviously I found Radner's little tome brimming with information punctuated by actual quotations from translated cuneiform tablets of the period. She also included some black-and-white images, diagrams of excavated structures, maps, a timeline, a recommended reading list and index. I must admit I struggled a bit with Assyrian names and the fact that Assyrian archaeological sites like Nimrud had a totally different name in antiquity (ancient Kalhu). I would have also preferred a more linear organization of material about the administration and achievements of specific rulers, but, I still found the book to be a welcome addition to my resource library.

Although this is the first book of this series I have ever seen here in the states, Oxford produces a number of them on a variety of topics. They kindly sent me another one on Roman Britain that I look forward to reading as well.

This short book is very well written and is an excellent introduction to the world of Ancient Assyria. It is written for a general audience. Having a little background is always helpful, but not necessary.

Excellent way to prep for a test

I have a problem with taking tests. I really want to become a Nationally Certified School Nurse. I have searched the internet for many months looking for some way to learn the necessary information I need to know to be successful in this endeavor. I know the information but I need to know how to show the test writers I know, despite my anxiety. I found Mometrix Flashcard Study System via Amazon after reading about it only a few sites, (I think it should be everywhere!). I love the fact it is set up in a format that allows you to vary the way you study; by catagories, Leitner system, or any other way that works for you. They are easy to read, easy to remember the answer and explain why the answer is what it is, not just stating the answer. I have recommended this system to many of my friends who are school nurses also.

Increase your confidence and make you ready to take the test

If you feel need to get more studying in for the NBCSN Exam then be sure to get this flashcard study system. The cards are very detailed and are written in a concise dialogue that promotes learning and retention. You can take them anywhere you go and you won't believe how much more studying you can put in when you have these cards with you. Even if you're just taking a quick break at work or commuting you can just as easily be on a study break. All that extra time adds up and will help to increase your confidence and make you ready to take the test and pass it.

Contemporary Projects for Needlepoint & Cross Stitch

It’s a rare modern cross stitch book that can make the transition to needlepoint as easily and beautifully as Big Cross Stitch does. In fact, if you saw the cover picture without the title you’d probably think it was needlepoint.

That’s because much modern cross stitch uses several things that don’t translate to needlepoint very well, namely: lots of colors, outlining, and partial stitches. In this book we find bold designs without the detail of outlining, relatively few colors, and whole stitches.

Besides these things, the designs completely cover the ground, unlike most cross stitch and they are stitched in a familiar material– tapestry wool.

Look inside and you’ll find that the designs are all stitched on 7-count needlepoint canvas (rug or quickpoint canvas), using a strand of tapestry wool, with only a few using cross stitch fabrics. It’s a larger ground, and more contemporary designs, but this is the same stitch and yarn used in Elizabeth Bradley kits.

In fact, in her introduction, Pearce says that these designs can all be done as needlepoint. She explains that her big cross stitch technique is a hybrid of needlepoint and cross stitch.

There are 30 projects in all ranging from a small change purse to a Christmas tree skirt. Each project is introduced with a full-page picture plus a smaller detail picture. A box called ‘stitch stats’ has the stitch count, thread, ground (called base), and skill level. The skill levels are consistent throughout the book an are defined in the first section. The first page for each project also has a material list (with amounts) and the method to complete stitching the project.

Following this you will find a full-color chart, color key, and finishing instructions. Also on these pages are some ideas for variations in making the project.

My only problem with the book is that many of the charts cover two pages. Often this can cause problems, but these charts are large and the book opens enough, so that no part is lost in the binding.

The final chapter, Stitching School, covers the basics from thread coverage to basic stitching techniques. There is also a color conversion charts that uses both symbols and names and lists colors in Appleton, DMC floss, and Anchor floss. It ends with finishing instructions for a variety of items.

I love the designs in this book. They are bright without looking childish, modern but modern that is a twist on the traditional. It’s a great resource for easy-to-complete projects that deserves a spot on your shelf.

Sexy Sweet Short Story

am a longtime lover of Tammy Falkner and the Reed Brothers series. I always enjoy her short stories that give up glimpses into the side characters we get to meet briefly and want to know more about. Yes. You is about Bob and Madison who are Reagan’s parents in Calmly, Carefully, Completely. From Reagan’s book we knew that Bob was an ex-con and Madison was the good girl who fell for him. Their connection was instant and their love lasting.

‘There’s one thing I do know. This is not a girl you f***. This is a girl you take home to meet your mother. I wish I had one.’

Bob and Madison could not have come from more different backgrounds and yet it is clear from the moment they meet that they just belong together. While this story is incredibly short it tells a full tale and had me falling hard for bad boy Bob and too sweet Madison. Without going into it too much I will just say that when it comes to these two there is more than meets the eye. This story was sugary sweet and fun to read. Easily read as a standalone but if you are a fan of the Reed Brothers than you definitely don’t want to miss this one! Reagan and Peter’s book (Calmly, Carefully, Completely) is my favorite in the series and hearing more about Reagan’s parents only made me love it even more.

This was a lovely story about love and forgiveness.

Yes. You. and goes back in time to when Reagan’s parents met. Do you remember her from Calmly, Carefully and Completely? When I briefly met them back then I loved Madison’s understanding towards her daughter and Bob’s protectiveness. So as parents and secondary characters they were pretty awesome and getting a chance to know how their love began is a great nugget. Especially since their meeting is similar to Reagan and Pete’s.

Bob is a bad boy who’s given a second chance. Madison is a rich girl who apparently has it all. They might seem like complete opposites, but Madison doesn’t just see his outer persona, she also sees all the good in him. Their kindred spirits connect and over the holidays they start their forever.
“Who am I?” he asks.
His blue eyes look deeply into mine. “You’re everything,”

I really enjoy Tammy’s unique writing style with so much heart and humor I can’t help but fall for her characters and stories.

Good Novella!!

Yes, You is all about how Reagan and Lincoln's parents from the Reed Brothers Series meet and fall in love. Madison is a rich girl who has this fascinating with Bob, a bad boy that has a second chance after getting in trouble that involves Madison's Father. A simple motorcycle ride starts this journey for the both of them coming into their own and having a love that will last a lifetime.

This is a very quick read but it's full of romance and adventure. I never read this series before or any books by Tammy Falkner and now I want to read everything she has put out!! The only thing I didn't really like was the language they were using at each other toward the end of the book but overall it was pretty good!!

Thank You to Tammy Falkner for making me a reader of yours with this one novella!!

Oral Cancer: the dentist's role

An excellent book that deals with the most common afections of the oral tissues. The illustration of the cases are very ellocuent. I was looking for a book that had the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer and buying this book has been a good choice.
