What Else Could We Expect From a Book Published in 1983...?

* Spoiler Alert* Corporate raider, Rafe Santine ('Santine')came up from a bad situation to become the 'satorial[ly] elegan[t]' man he is today: Born a bastard (today, I think we would say 'illegitimate'), abandoned by a mother with more important things on her mind than raising her son into a man, Santine had little more than the foster system and his own drive and God-given ingenuity to serve as his foundation. At sixteen, Santine began working at the construction company that would be the first company he would own-and all by the age of twenty three! And so, when game warden and curator of a wild-animal reserve near Sandiego, Janna Cannon makes her fateful entr�e into his life, while he may have developed into a `legend[ary]' and `self-made billionaire wielding more power than many heads of state', Santine is noticeably less developed in the emotional department; The male lead of THE LADY AND THE UNICORN often acts the part of a spoiled and petulant child-thinking everything should be his way all the time. A supreme narcissist, readers will agree that is about time Santine had a reason to think about someone other than himself. Janna is supposed to be that reason.

Johansen wants the reader to accept that Janna's need to save some of the endangered species and other wild animals would make her willing to accept an indecent proposal from a giant of a man with harsh, rugged features, who cool as a cucumber proclaims that he'd like to keep her as a pet: "I said that I'd never had a pet. Well I've decided to acquire one for the next month or so. My own wild thing to keep me amused until I can return to San Franci[s]co." A bargain is struck-a grant of Santine's land in return for Janna's cooperation. And so, using this rather unbelievable and yet interesting device, Johansen's contrivance keeps the leads together and a romance...of sorts...is set to unravel.

The story is really a play on Beauty and the Beast to this reviewer's mind. The 1983 setting allows for a hero that is more dominant and cavalier with the heroine's needs than is popularly described today. Accordingly, the heroine accepts this rough treatment with eternal serenity and grace-also unlikely to see a female lead written this way today. Also, there are a few uncomfortable moments, such as when Santine declares: `I've been on the verge of raping you since I looked up and saw you shimmering in the lamplight like a sexy ghost' and his determination to call Janna an `earth mother' in several (maybe all) of the love scenes or `Pocahontas' because of her Native American heritage.... If you can get past the fact that THE LADY AND THE UNICORN is NOT politically correct, then you'll be okay. And Santine's revelation regarding the meaning of the title alone is worth reading THE LADY AND THE UNICORN.

A captivating story full of Johansen quality romance.

This is a wonderful romance, with a strong heroine. Janna Cannon would do whatever it takes to ensure Rafe Santine donated a huge chunk of land to her wildlife refuge for endangered animals. Santine's price: for Janna to become his "pet". A great romance about how only by letting a wild thing free can one ever truly own it. I love all of Iris Johansen's romances, but this one is one of my personal favorites.

She has high demands of him, but Rafe has even greater demands of her. He knows instantly that he must possess every facet of the enigmatic Janna. But the only thing she'll give him is her body--and for the first time in his life, that is not enough for Rafe.
Janna Cannon is willing to risk it all to save the endangered animals of the wild animal reserve where she works as a game warden. With the land they depend on pulled out from under them, Janna must take a gambit to convince billionaire Santine to give the reserve the real estate they need to keep the animals free. And she'll need to sneak onto the man's vast, highly protected property to do it. Much to her surprise, Santine agrees to grant her the land--if Janna agrees to give him herself in exchange. And what begins as luxurious captivity soon turns into an emotional awakening she never expected.

Thoughts: This is a reprint of one of Iris Johansen's books that she wrote for the classic Loveswept series in 1983. I actually read this book many years ago, but it was really nice to re-visit this book! Iris Johansen was actually my favorite author until she started delving more into the mystery/thriller genre rather than the romance novels I am familiar with from her. While I understand her wanting to branch out as an author, I miss her romances something fierce!! Her older books are favorites of mine that I revisit frequently, though it has been awhile since I read this particular one.

In this book, we have billionaire Rafe Santine, who is growing bored during his forced recuperation after an illness. When a lovely intruder finds her way past the walls to his castle - and casts a spell over his guard dogs - he thinks he might have just found something to relieve his boredom. But in the lovely Janna, he may have bit off more than he can chew.

Janna Cannon is passionate about the protection of wildlife - particularly that of endangered animals - and she has come to plead with Rafe to grant them the two million dollar land for a wild animal preserve. But when she's forced to remain on Rafe's estate for two months in exchange, will she find herself losing her heart in the process?

Keep in mind when you are reading these novels, how much the romance genre has changed over the years. Again, this book was written in 1983, so if you haven't read a lot of the classic romance novels from the 80's or from previous years, you might react to the characters and/or the story a little differently. Rafe may come off as a bit dominant and callous compared to today's typical male leads, and Janna is so passive and accepting - and even serene - in the face of this treatment that at times it can seem a bit unrealistic. There are also a few things said throughout the book that are not exactly politically and culturally correct today. (One example, is Rafe referring to her as 'Pocahontas' because of her Native American heritage) But if you can keep in mind when this book was released, and overlook a few things like that, it really is a great read.

Yet, in some ways this book is also a little before it's time - I particularly liked when Janna took Rafe off guard by referring to sex a nothing but a 'biological coupling' - which was a pretty modern view to take back then. And it incenses him to no end throughout the book that she might feel that way about ther lovemaking. And while Rafe is gruff on the exterior, he becomes soft, sweet, and sentimental with Janna - once she 'tames the beast'. The lengths he goes through to keep her with him, and the soft side he displays that is such a contradiction to his character that it had my heart skipping a beat in numerous places throughout the novel. And Janna, while she may seem passive compared to today's heroines, manages to not fall completely under his thumb. She finds small ways in which to show her rebellious streak. And the fact that Rafe realizes that he must soften and change is really quite endearing.

While this book is not my favorite of hers, it does come in somewhere in the top. In my opinion, Johansen is one of the most romantic writers I have ever read. I love her stories from Loveswept! Her books always wring such emotions from me. I love seeing such strong male characters ultimately fall apart at the feet of the women that they love in order to win them forever. Beautiful tale that is definitely a "keeper"!

Based in Boulder, Colorado, Robert Henson is a meteorologist and blogger at Weather Underground and contributing editor of Weatherwise magazine. Before joining Weather Underground in 2015, Henson spent more than 20 years writing on weather and climate for the National Center for Atmospheric Research. He is the author of Weather on the Air: A History of Broadcast Meteorology and coauthor with C. Donald Ahrens of the textbook Meteorology Today (11th edition). The book is an updated version of his "Rough Guide to Climate Change". I've thought so highly of this book that I've purchased over 200 copies over the years, giving them to students, TV meteorologists, politicians running for U.S. Congress, and the leadership of The Weather Channel. If I were teaching a course on climate change at the high school or introductory college level, this would be the text. Mr. Henson is probably the world's premier science writer in meteorology and climate change.

Perhaps the Best Introductory Guide to Climate Change

This is a lucid and well written book. It is written in a friendly spirit of curiosity. And it manages to somehow speak to the unlearned, the skeptics, and more experienced climate advocates, like myself, alike. This is a tall order and should not be taken lightly - Henson has written a remarkable book. Eschewing the wake-up calls of climate advocates and textbook science alike, Henson writes with a spirit of curiosity. This can be disarming of climate skeptics, because it focuses attention on open scientific inquiry and a sense of fascination. And there is a friendliness to his tone, which lends itself well to sustained inquiry. Henson is less less likely to leave you depressed or else swinging between hopelessness and heroic action. But he does not neglect the politics of climate change or what you can do in your own life. The Thinking Person's Guide is, in short, a very thorough and balanced work.

Many climate advocates know how to answer the difficult questions and how to stare down a climate skeptic, but the sense of open inquiry found in this work is often missing in their approach. And it all too often seems they are missing the core of the science. Climate science is immensely complex, drawing on multiple difference sciences: oceanography, meteorology, geology, ecology, and more. Climate advocacy, on the other hand, requires a focused and sustained message. Henson's work covers it all and with great balance, and can thus serve as a compliment to the focus of climate advocates. He is a meteorologist, and this lends to his work its own unique hues. It is good to explore climate science from many different viewpoints so as to deepen your sense of what is happening. It is not a simple issue and treating it as such can dissociate climate activism from climate science. Each are important, and they are separate phenomenon. But climate advocates would do well to be able to think like climate scientists, and Henson encourages this approach.

Although he is not a practicing climate scientist, he has spent his career working closely with them and now writes for one of the biggest weather blogs in the world. But a full disclosure is in order: he is a close friend of mine. However, much of our friendship was formed around the strong impression his writings left on me and my regular and repeated inquiries into his views on the science of climate change. There are many remarkable scientists, like E.O Wilson and Carl Sagan, who bring to their work a welcoming voice. Each is unique in style, as is Henson. His own voice is friendly and fascinated. It is quite unique in the climate writings I have read, and they are quite extensive. I encourage you to absorb it and to use it to sustain your own inquiry. And if you are a teacher, wanting to introduce just the right voice to a diverse group of students, I cannot think of a better work. I hope you will enjoy this as much as I.

A Disciple of John Henry Jowett

Used repeatedly for several years as a daily devotional book with my husband we consider it to be one of the best we have ever seen. The scriptural insights are so fresh and create for us many "Ah Ha" moments. I can highly recommend this book for any age to be used in a group or individually.

What I was hoping for

Regarding the previous buyer's feedback: I purchased a hard copy, and there are no grammatical or spelling errors.

I purchased this book after reading Titan; The life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr by Ron Chernow; a great read. Chernow stated Rockefeller read this book daily while in retirement.

I have read many other books in this genre and this one is definitely up top. Jowett uses obscure verses from the bible; verses that one would usually read by with no thought, and breathes new meaning and insight into them. The daily passages are brief and concise which leads to no excuses for skipping a day's read.

Great insight that I will help me live out my TRUE SELF!

A few months ago I read Chuck DeGroats book "Toughest People to Love, Including Yourself" and LOVED that book. So once I heard this book was coming out I pre-ordered this. Wholeheartedness is beginning to be something I am striving for in life and this book really helped shed light on how to live more wholehearted in who we truly are.

I love how this book is layed out with the first part of the book "Diagnosing our Unwholeness" and the second part helping me walk through some questions, quotes, and other material to start the journey to being whole. I felt this helped me start to experience the Wholeheartedness Chuck talked about.

There was a lot I enjoyed in the book but these were the two that really impacted me:

1)Looking at all the "d" esires in my life was really good to just meditate on. It helped for me to write them down. I then asked myself which of these would I have a hard time giving up for awhile. The list was quite extensive but the one that caused anxiety the most and made my heart race was reading books. Through that I realized how much of my identity has been wrapped up in learning and the next thing and being productive. I had been so wrapped up in being productive at all times I was disconnected and didn't even reallize what I was doing to myself. So I am giving up reading books for awhile and focusing on prayer and meditation. It has also led me back to getting in the word. My pastor always says a good book is one that get's you in the Word. Your book has done that for me.

-The other part of looking at all of your different selves around your house and having conversations with them. Not just tuning out those voices but talking and interacting with them. This has been monumental for me.

Thanks Chuck for serving me well. This book was a joy to read and I had to force myself to slowdown and fully take it in!

Healing the Divided Self

David Letterman described life as a late-night TV host with this reflection:

“Every night you’re trying to prove your self-worth. You want to be the absolute best, wittiest, smartest, most charming, best-smelling version of yourself. If I can make people enjoy the experience and have a higher regard for me when I’m finished, it makes me feel like an entire person. If I’ve come short of that, I’m not happy.”
To some degree, we all know that vulnerability, and we are well-versed in the ways of frantic effort and self-doubt. Regardless of income, profession, or educational level the pull toward frantic is an ever-present reality, exacerbated by scarcity of time. Chuck DeGroat examines the roots of busyness and exhaustion in Wholeheartedness, pondering why those of use who are among the most well-resourced in the world “feel dirt poor” when it comes to the resource of time. It turns out that the antidote to the epidemic of exhaustion is not simply more bodily rest, but rather a soul-ish rest that leads to wholeness.

Part One of Wholeheartedness examines the divided life in brutal detail along with its deep dissatisfaction, shame, and perfectionism. In his first book, Leaving Egypt, Chuck refers to a “Stockholm syndrome of the soul,” for our “mindless self-sabotage” of poor choices often perpetuates our fragmented and scattered condition. We avoid taking on the hard work of change that comes with a right response to our “Inner Critic” — the voice that keeps us in a perpetual state of not-enough. Shame is the fuel that powers perfectionism and stifles self-compassion. The wholehearted response to the voice of our Inner Critic is, in fact, to embrace our imperfections as a gateway to grace that heals and redeems the messy parts of our lives.

The Apostle Paul described his own feelings of un-wholeness in Romans 7, an intimate journal entry that invites me to embrace my own inadequacies and to receive the grace of God in exchange for my imperfection. Following an enlightening analysis of the neurobiology of wholeness, Chuck urges his readers to pay attention to what’s going on inside the amazing brains God has made, for mending our inner terrain will bring clarity to the big picture.

The poets have always known what the rest of us are just guessing at, and in Part Two of Wholeheartedness, Chuck has harnessed the strong words of poets like Mary Oliver and Gerard Manley Hopkins to light the path toward wholehearted living. Derek Walcott portrays steps toward wholeness as a homecoming, “a holy reunion with our deepest self,” in which you “greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror and each will smile at the other’s welcome and say, sit here. Eat.”

It is in this way that Wholeheartedness distinguishes its offering of wisdom, for authentic living is not the same as a narcissistic rummaging around in our emotional entrails — nor is it a “live your best life” campaign that feeds my already well-fed selfishness. Instead, it is a road map that points out the obstacles to wholeness and then marks out carefully considered detours that resonate with Sermon on the Mount priorities and Pauline wisdom:

May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it!
What a lovely juxtaposition: holiness and wholeness, and Chuck spends a considerable amount of thought in that place, reminding his readers that:

purity is about being put together again, being made whole. No wonder Jesus said that the pure of heart are blessed!
wholeness implies that the inner life matches the outer life.
God will do the purifying work through our brokenness, which is an unshackling from the “exhausting holiness project,” that starts out strong but ends up becoming an obstacle to wholeness over the long haul.
Part Three moves away from theory and into the practice of cultivating wholeness amid our scattered selves. The “trinity” of wholeness is awareness, story, and relationship, and through the use of questions, guided exercises, and observations from his counseling practice, Chuck encourages his readers to rejoice in the truth that God invites us to be curious about our emotions and our body cues. “What’s happening here?’ is a healthy question. The awareness that this fosters will spill over into the living and the telling of our story and the longed-for sense of wholeness that follows finds its way into a vulnerability and unselfishness that is foundational to healthy relationships.

Finally (and ironically), it is in a community of believers that one is most able to realize and express ones wholeness. C.S. Lewis observed:

“It is when I turn to Christ, when I give myself up to His Personality, that I first begin to have a real personality of my own.”
What if we were to wake one morning to the realization that wholehearted living is a life of union — and also of unity? What if our churches, families, workplaces — all the sources of our division and fragmentation headaches — became the places where we began embracing our own brokenness and extending grace in response to that of others? And what if the promise is really true? What would happen if we really did release our burdens — the endless do-list from the Inner Critic, the searing brokenness from childhood hurts, and the crushing awareness of our inadequacies. What would happen if we really brought them to Jesus and found that, in doing so, we had come home to ourselves?

I read this for Environmental Science

Best Part: The best part of An Inconvenient truth is the ending. Al Gore brings up the point that earth is our only home, and we must take care of it. He encourages the fact that you can preserve the health of our planet so that it will remain beautiful for generations and centuries to come.

Most Interesting: One of the most interesting parts of this book is the side effects that technology has on the Earth. There are also some improvements that technology has made. One of them being that it has improved people’s lives in many ways. “A hundred and fifty years ago, before the invention of the electric lightbulb, the world at night was dark”. However technology hasn’t always been used wisely. The former Soviet Union diverted water from two mighty rivers in Central Asia in order to irrigate cotton fields.

Was It A Good Book: Yes, This book was an interesting book because it was filled with many interesting facts about global warming and the impact humans have made on the planet. Al Gore who was Bill Clintons vice president narrates the book and the movie. He talked about his personal experiences with the change in today’s society and how it affects the world around him and also about his travels and understanding of the changes being made to the atmosphere.

Everyone should read this whether they like Gore or not.

This is a very thick paperback. I got a little disgusted knowing I needed to read this for Conservation class. But when I got into the book and discovered what was happening to the air around me it got me thinking. Everyone should read this book. It is informative even if you don't believe what Gore says. It's reading that makes you think and sometimes worry. After taking this class, I'm more concerned about the environment we live in and try to recycle everything I use today.

Al Gore is doing humanity a huge favor by forcing domestic policy focus on the political issue of global warming and climate change. The multiple book font type and illistrations are, in my opinion, distracting and unusual. Then on the other hand, the topic of climate change is unusual. The DVD video is, in my view, a much more powerful product. The message is essential to understand not only from the damage being imposed on the atmospheric global commons but the damage being imposed on the American economy as the European Union (EU) and 166 nation signatories begin to act upon the Kyoto Protocols -- the protocol actually advanced by the US Government from the onset of the Framework on Climate Change. The book and DVD are powerful introductions to the study of climate change by the non-scientist. The real SCARE comes after digging into the real science of climate change. The so-called 'junk science' is produced by those seeking to mask the need for change. I would recommend several books on the European Emissions Trading Scheme and how the carbon trade is operating in Europe as a means to understanding the future of climate policy after the Al Gore book and DVD introductions to the issue. The carbon market exchange will be a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States post-2010. This book can serve to understand why the carbon market will be of such significance in the future.
