Wisdom, Depth, and a Swoon-worthy Hero

The Awakening, the second book in the series, had the word “brilliant” flittering on the periphery of my thoughts as I plowed through it.
The book takes place largely in a dream world as Tess and Luka learn to manipulate the physical and spiritual realms. Safe together in "the Hub" as they develop their powers, they are, ironically, pulled apart.
Luka is tormented by dreams portending Tess’s death. Tess is alternatively driven to do more to save her grandmother and live up to her potential, and to cower in fear and reject her gift.
Cap offers Tess this wisdom: “Your gifting isn’t something you earned or deserved. It was given to you. It’s a gift, the size and value of which says more about the giver than the recipient. By definition, it doesn’t come from you at all.”
This is a stellar example of how K.E. Ganshert uses her dystopian world to subtly convey beautiful truths about life and faith.
Passages throughout the book hint at the fallen angels, the power of free will, the eugenics movement, and the evil of mass exterminations perpetrated by brutal regimes throughout history.
Free will is a recurrent theme, and what Tess perceives as Luka’s lack of it causes her to continually doubt his affection for her. How can he truly love her if he is drawn to her, compelled to defend and protect her from birth, propelled by an innate force not of his own choosing? (A question beautifully resolved in the final book.)
Not only is this book full of wisdom and depth, but girls will swoon for protective, handsome, respectful, and gentlemanly Luka.

Oh my word – the second book is even better than the first!
I think I alienated everyone around me, because I concentrated so much on the story, I heard nothing and no one. But not to worry; they love me – and they understand me… and my compulsion with books.
I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the characters in this series.
K.E. Gansert helps to develop many of the characters by having Tess focus on them; so essentially we see them through her eyes. I could say more, but I don’t want to give away something, so I’ll just let you read it for yourself and see what I mean.
There’s much to be revealed in the way Tess and Luka relate with their families and friends. Though there are understandably man twists and turns, it’s easy to see how this experience is helping them to grow.
I don’t feel like my review is really showing how much I enjoyed the story… and I really want you to feel my enthusiasm and the “thrill of the ride”. It’s like being on a roller coaster – you know it’s going to be scary and bumpy, but the ride is exhilarating!
Don’t take my word for it – get your hands on this series… buckle up… and hang on!
**spoiler alert** If reading about Ouija boards and a s�ance isn’t something you want to do – even once – you might need to skip this series. I say “no” to both things, but I feel comfortable promoting these books. The author makes it clear that these things are not good – and they should be avoided at all cost.

Dying in wait of Book Three because The Awakening was that good! Definently a must read!

The second book was probably better than the first, at least in my opinion. You learn some of the answers to your ever growing list of questions. It starts off where it left you in the first book, waiting for Dr Roth. (Skipping over a lot so that I don't spoil) They head to Detroit and find others that are also apart of The Gifting. Tess and Luka's budding romance is in full swing, which made me giddy to no end. Sadly, something that will break your heart happens in this book... I'm a person who doesn't want to give away too much so that's all I will say. This book also ends on a cliffhanger and I am dying as I wait (not so patiently) for September 8th to come. I recommend this book to just about everyone. The way this is going, I bet The Gathering will be the best book of all. But I will be sad to see them go.... Anyways, great read! Buy the first book first though!
