BOOK DESCRIPTION
A prince by day and a wolf by night—

Prince Alexander has been turned into a werewolf and has one year to find someone to love the beast and break the spell, or he will be a wolf forever. He has nearly given up achieving the impossible, knowing no girl would ever fall in love with such a monster.

Just when he is about to abdicate the throne to his cousin, he meets Cecelia Hammerstein-Smythe, while a wolf, and begins to hope for the first time in months. Can he balance both worlds as a human and beast, gaining the love and trust of a girl who has every reason to despise him?

Cecelia detests the prince. She only knows Alexander as the arrogant monarch—the tyrant who has made her life miserable—though perhaps he's changed right before her eyes. He's not as full of himself as he once was. The prince is gentle now... but then again, so is the beast.

REVIEWS FOR NORTHANGER ALIBI (THE JANE AUSTEN DIARIES), ALSO BY JENNI JAMES:

"Twilight obsessed teens (and their moms) will relate to Claire's longing for the fantastical but will be surprised when they find the hero is even better than a vampire or werewolf. Hilarious, fun and romantic!"
-TwilightMOMS.com

“Stephenie Meyer meets Jane Austen in this humorous, romantic tale of a girl on a mission to find her very own Edward Cullen. I didn't want it to end!"
--Mandy Hubbard, author of Prada & Prejudice

"We often speak of Jane Austen's satiric wit, her social commentary, her invention of the domestic novel. But Jenni James, in this delicious retelling of Northanger Abbey, casts new light on Austen's genius in portraying relationships and the foibles of human nature--in this case, the projection of our literary fantasies onto our daily experience."
--M.M. Bennetts, author of May 1812.

A Beautiful Classic Poorly Executed
By FunK
I was so excited to read this book because Beauty and the Beast is my absolute favorite story of all time. I was disappointed throughout the entire reading process and it did not leave me wanting more like other renditions I've read. There were very minor grammar problems, which I could've dealt with because the book was cheap. But the writing was just sad. There wasn't much depth, the random kissing scenes destroyed the Belle's image. Despite the plot and famous lesson of the story, Cecilia was pretty shallow as the main character. The fairytale was suppose to be about how she fell in love with a beast after getting to know him for a while. The very foundation of their relationship was built on that. But here she barely met with him and decidedly loved him unconditionally. And is there a chapter where giggling WASN'T described as one of her actions??? She got really annoying. It was like a book written for preteens. The only reason why it's 2 stars instead of one is because it's a Beauty and the Beast story.

A sweet retelling of Beauty and the Beast
By Amy @ Books, College, and Other Random Things
Prince Alexander used to constantly poke fun at people until he made fun of an older woman, who just happened to be a witch. She cursed him to transform into a wolf every night. He would have a year to find someone to love him as a beast or he'd be stuck like that forever.

Cecelia Hammerstein-Smythe has been talking to Lord Willington and believes he is going to propose to her when he takes her on an open carriage ride. Lord Willington has other news...he's proposed to someone else. Cecelia's distraught. Her mother has been telling all of the village of his intentions to marry her daughter.

All of the friends Cecelia thought she knew only talks to her to find out so they can gossip. As a wolf, Alexander sees Cecelia at a brook crying. After Cecelia knocks him in the head, Cecelia eventually warms up to the wolf, having no idea that it's really Alexander.
Whenever Alexander tries to talk to her in human form, she wants nothing to do with him because of his constantly demeaning her...but not so much anymore. Can Alexander convince Cecelia that he deserves a second chance?

I've always loved Beauty and the Beast as a child. For a while I thought about getting an e-book by Jenni James, but I hadn't yet. Once I saw this story, I just knew I had to give it a try, and this certainly did not disappoint.

I felt so bad for Cecelia. First, the guy you love proposing to someone else, then your so-called friends are just trying to find any information so they can gossip. I did feel too bad for Alexander at first, but it was funny how Cecelia tried to avoid him and quit conversing with him as a human.

I liked Alexander's journey onto becoming a better person, and Cecelia's finding a true friend. This is for anyone who loves retellings of fairy tales who don't mind reading at the middle grade and lower end of the age range of young adult books.

I can't wait to read the rest of the books in Jenni's Faerie Tale Collection.

I couldn't get into this book
By Phantom Bookworm
I'm really disappointed I didn't like this book because, based on all of the good reviews, I had the impression going in that it would be a nice read. I've read multiple Beauty and Beast retellings in the past, so maybe I'm just picky because I've been over-exposed to this particular tale. I've read Beastly (which I liked) and two books by Robin McKinley (which I thought were just OK.)

What I did not enjoy about this book: Overall, it struck me as very unpolished. The story had potential, in my opinion, but there were many aspects of it that seemed underdeveloped and lacking in scope/detail/depth. Further, I did not enjoy the writing style. I thought it was rather contrived and juvenile. I realize that this is the first book in the fairy tale collection, so I'm sure the author's writing and story-telling ability has evolved (as everyone's does when they continue to write.) Even though I didn't enjoy this book, I would definitely give this author another chance. So if you're a fan of this author and have a book you would like to recommend, please feel free to share.

It is obvious that this book is self-published, and even though I think self-publishing is wonderful and has the potential to produce fresh and non-formulaic story lines/characters, self-publishing can also encourage authors to be lazy with editing and story/character development, so their book ends up reading more like a rough draft than something professional. As a writer myself, this makes no sense to me because I would think that authors would care more about how they present themselves to their readers.

This next reason may seem silly to some, but it has always been a pet peeve of mine with books. I absolutely despise the names the author chose for her characters, especially that of the heroine's. Her name is very long and convoluted, and I found myself stumbling over it every time. On top of that, the author seemed to think it was necessary to repeat her full name about thirty thousand times. The heroine, in general, annoyed me because her character was so underdeveloped and one-dimensional. She would have been much easier to relate to and understand if the author had spent more time fleshing out her emotions and the underlying reasons for her behavior. Same goes for pretty much everything else in the story.

Also, being a history major and a person who lives to read historical fantasy/fiction, I would have liked if the author paid more attention to the setting, which obviously took place in another time period. When authors pay attention to little details like this, it can make a huge difference on how the reader connects to the story, location, and characters. I could tell that the author deliberately avoided details like these, instead painting a rather vague and colorless environment. This may not e the case with the author's other novels.

Overall, I felt that this book had an interesting premise but that it was never fully-realized. For a book that is less than 200 pages, it seemed to last forever. I had to skim the last three chapters because I couldn't stand it anymore. This is all my very humble opinion. There are, obviously, many people who loved the book, so don't take my word for it -- go check it out yourself! As I said before, I'm probably going to be more critical because I've read many Beauty and the Beast stories before, some of which I really enjoyed.
