This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed the characters, the writing, and the suspenseful storyline. However, condensing the story would have moved it along a bit more for me because the pacing was very slow at times. It felt like the hero and heroine would never get together and sadly if not for the mystery aspect I might have given up on this couple.
The story is told in ‘parts” as the hero and heroine are 12 and 7 years old when they meet. Cole is rescued from his abusive father by the kick ass single dad next door. Mia’s dad, Mace was an amazing character whom could have been the lead because for me he was sexy, tough and just wonderful.
”Don’t let the unfortunate circumstances of your childhood dictate the rest of your life. Reach for the star, Cole, I’ll help you.”
Mace and young Mia take Cole into their home and try to protect him until one day when Cole must stand on his own against his father. Thereafter, Cole feels less than and keeps the only people that matter to him at a distance. Eventually Mace takes Cole back under his wing and gives him honest work at his garage and though Mia tries to reconnect with her childhood friend he continues to keep his distance from the young girl who has turned into a beautiful woman.
The years go by and by and a reader waits on Cole to get his head out of his pity party ass and stop hooking up with random women and embrace what he could have with Mia.
"Why do you do that? Stay back in the shadows like it's the only place you belong?" His easy grin faded and yet I hadn't a clue what he was thinking.
"It's where I belong."
Big money comes to town taking over mom and pop shops, while some sleazy men seem to be putting pressure on Mace for his garage. A accident or what appears to be one takes place which leads to Mia asking questions and land herself on the radar of some dangerous people. Cole’s investigating skills on his own were pretty crappy. Up until Mia approaches him with things that don’t add up to her, he didn’t come up with anything really on his own.
To my great disappointment, I got all sorts of annoyed when the reveals seemed so very obvious.
However, the author wasn’t done with her reveals and twists. I totally didn’t see the last one coming so kudos because that was very well played!
If the story was only condensed to quicken the pace and the hero would have moved faster out of his protect Mia from himself plight, cut out the spanking jokes, and the scene with the woman in his office, this could have been a full 5 star read for me. I'll be watching to see what this author writes in the future for sure!

Wow ,',I loved this book ,very emotional . It had it all ,love hate,tears,murder and you will love Cole ,a batter child ,who grew into a six foot six pack sexy as all hell ,and With the help of a loving family who took him he was pulled from the dark into the light ,banging ending ,'its a must read 5 stars

An amazing love story that developed over time but they knew in an instant. There was suspense and action and drama. And love and deceit and surprise. My first book by this author by looking forward to reading more.
